Translating philosophical texts in the age of machine translation

Anotácia:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá překladem textů z oblasti filozofie. Teoretická část se věnuje specifikům filozofických textů obecně a následně pojednává jak o filozofii překladu, tak o překladu filozofie. Jádrem práce je otázka, zda by při překladu takového typu textů bylo možné využít strojový překlad. Předmětem analýzy je osm textů z osmi různých filozofických disciplín přeložených z angličtiny do češtiny pomocí volně dostupného překladače DeepL. Cílem zkoumání je zjistit, zda je v určitých filozofických disciplínách překladač úspěšnější než v jiných, popřípadě ve kterých oblastech přináší jeho použití nejuspokojivější výsledky.

Abstract:

This master’s thesis deals with the translation of philosophical texts. The theoretical part discusses their specifics in general and then examines both the philosophy of translation and the translation of philosophy. The crux of the thesis is the question whether machine translation could be used on philosophical texts. The subject of the analysis consists of eight texts from eight different philosophical disciplines translated from English into Czech using the freely available DeepL Translator. The research aims to find out whether the machine translator is more successful in certain philosophical branches than in others, or in which areas its use provides the most satisfactory results.
