Boko Haram – The activity and socio-economic impact on countries in the region

Abstract:

Boko Haram se od svého vzniku stala jednou z největších teroristických skupin v Africe. V průběhu svého působení šířila svůj vliv ve státech regionu Čadského jezera a v době, kdy ovládala největší území, přísahala věrnost tzv. Islámskému státu. Tato bakalářská práce popisuje vývoj této skupiny a analyzuje dopady jejích aktivit na dané státy. Tyto aktivity zasáhly zejména státy severovýchodní Nigérie, ve kterých bylo provedeno nejvíce útoků a bylo jim způsobeno nejvíce škod. Při pohledu na ekonomiky jednotlivých zemí se boj s Boko Haram promítl ve zvýšení výdajů na obranu a bezpečnost a v případě Nigérie na úbytku přímých zahraničních investic. Tato práce zdůrazňuje potřebu zabývat se příčinami, které vedly ke vniku Boko Haram, aby se do budoucna předešlo dalšímu konfliktu.

Abstract:

Boko Haram has become one of the biggest terrorist groups in Africa since its emergence. It spread its influence in the countries of Lake Chad region during the activity and when it controlled the biggest part of territory, it pledged allegiance to so called Islamic State. This bachelor thesis describes the evolution of this group and analyses the impact of its activities on affected states. These activities have affected particularly states in North-Eastern Nigeria where Boko Haram committed most of its attacks and caused most of losses. When looking at the economies of each country, the fight against Boko Haram has caused the increase of expenditure on defence and security and led to decline of FDI in Nigeria. This thesis stresses that it is necessary to study the causes of Boko Haram emergency to prevent the outbreak of another conflict in the future.
