The Role of the Myth in Greek Thought: Homer and Plato

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce si klade za cíl pozorovat přeměnu, kterou mýtus v řeckém myšlení v průběhu několika staletí prochází. Jsou stanoveny dva styčné body komparace mýtu skrze osobnosti Homéra a Platóna, kteří jsou exemplárními zástupci básnického a filosofického nazírání světa a kteří rovněž tvoří chronologický rámec práce. Text postupně přechází od obecných kapitol o vztahu mýtu a filosofie a významu řeckého epického básnictví tradice k rozboru konkrétních témat, jež v Homérově a Platónově díle nalézáme. Z těchto témat jsou pak nejvíce zmiňována ta, která v nějakém ohledu souvisejí s člověkem či héróem, s jeho duší, chováním nebo postexistencí v podsvětí. Z tohoto důvodu je v práci také zdůrazněna role myšlenkových směrů orfismu a pythagoreismu jako faktoru ovlivňujícím Platóna při jeho tvoření mýtů.

Abstract:

The aim of the Bachelor thesis is to examine a change of the myth in Greek way of thinking which it undergoes during a few centuries. It focuses on two points of contact of comparison of the myth, through two personalities - Homer and Plato. Both of them represent poetic and philosophic perspective on world, as well as the chronological framework of the thesis. Firstly, the text describes general chapters dealing with the relationship of the myth and philosophy and with the meaning of the Greek epic poetry of tradition. Subsequently, it centres on an analysis of the concrete themes which can be found in their writing. As for these themes, the thesis mentions the ones that are connected with human or hero, with his soul, behaviour or post existence in underworld. Hence, the role of Orphism and Pythagoreanism are emphasized, as both of them influence Plato and his creation of the myths.
