International commitments and agreements in forestry in Europe

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá současný stav lesnictví v Evropě v kontextu mezinárodních závazků a dohod. Cílem je popsat a zhodnotit, jak vybrané evropské země implementují mezinárodní závazky v oblasti lesnictví a do jaké míry jsou tyto závazky naplňovány. Práce se zaměřuje na klíčové dohody, jako je FOREST EUROPE, Úmluva OSN o biologické rozmanitosti a Nagojský protokol, které mají významný dopad na politiku a praktiky lesnictví v Evropě. Práce zahrnuje analýzu současného stavu lesů v Evropě a hodnotí úspěšnost jednotlivých zemí při implementaci mezinárodních závazků. Důraz je kladen na aspekty, jako je ochrana biodiverzity, udržitelné hospodaření s lesy a snižování emisí skleníkových plynů. Diskutuje se také o roli národních strategií a akčních plánů, v podpoře udržitelného lesnictví a o způsobech, jakým mezinárodní závazky ovlivňují národní politiky. Výsledky práce ukazují, že ačkoli existuje pokrok v naplňování mezinárodních závazků, stále existují významné výzvy. Mezi tyto výzvy patří nelegální těžba, odlesňování a narušení ekosystémů v důsledku změny klimatu. Práce také identifikuje příležitosti pro zlepšení, včetně posílení mezinárodní spolupráce, inovací v lesnictví a lepšího monitorování a hodnocení pokroku. Závěrem je zmíněno, že mezinárodní závazky a dohody hrají klíčovou roli v podpoře udržitelného lesnictví v Evropě, ale je zapotřebí dalšího úsilí k zajištění naplnění těchto závazků. Práce navrhuje doporučení pro budoucí kroky, mezi které řadíme lepší koordinaci mezi evropskými zeměmi, zvýšení financování udržitelného lesnictví a zvyšování povědomí o významu mezinárodních závazků pro ochranu lesů a životního prostředí.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis examines the current state of forestry in Europe in the context of international commitments and agreements. The aim is to describe and evaluate how selected European countries implement international commitments in the field of forestry and to what extent these commitments are fulfilled. The thesis focuses on key agreements such as FOREST EUROPE, the UN Convention on Biological Diversity and the Nagoya Protocol, which have a significant impact on forestry policy and practice in Europe. The work includes an analysis of the current state of forests in Europe and evaluates the success of individual countries in implementing international commitments. The focus is on aspects such as the protection of biodiversity, sustainable forest management and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The role of national strategies and action plans in promoting sustainable forestry and the ways in which international commitments influence national policies are also discussed. The results of the work show that although there is progress in fulfilling international obligations, there are still significant challenges. These challenges include illegal logging, deforestation and ecosystem disruption due to climate change. The work also identifies opportunities for improvement, including strengthening international cooperation, innovation in forestry and better monitoring and evaluation of progress. In conclusion, it is mentioned that international commitments and agreements play a key role in promoting sustainable forestry in Europe, but further efforts are needed to ensure the fulfillment of these commitments. The work proposes recommendations for future steps, among which we include better coordination between European countries, increased financing of sustainable forestry and raising awareness of the importance of international obligations for the protection of forests and the environment.
