Representation of Romani ethnic group in MF DNES journal news through the example of a fictional attack of Romani on a boy in Břeclav

Abstract:

Předmětem zájmu této práce je reprezentace Romů ve zpravodajských článcích českého deníku MF DNES. Analyzovaný vzorek textů obsahuje články o událostech v Břeclavi v roce 2012. Tehdy zde mělo dojít k napadení patnáctiletého chlapce, útočníky byli podle jeho svědectví Romové. To ve městě vyvolalo protiromské nálady a protesty, MF DNES o nich informovala. Specifikem zkoumaného vzorku článků je skutečnost, že hoch později svoji výpověď popřel. Útok Romů si vymyslel. Při analýze tak mimo jiné hledáme odpověď na otázku, zda se po tomto dějovém zlomu v následujících článcích změnila reprezentace Romů. Autor práce používá nástroje členské kategorizační analýzy a kritické diskursivní analýzy. Výstupem je tak i popis kategorizace romského etnika. Ve vztahu k mediální reprezentaci Romů autor hledá odpovědi na otázky o uplatnění prvků dominance a nerovnováhy skrze ideologickou polarizaci ?My? vs. ?Oni?. Předmětem zájmu jsou i průniky ideologie (nového) rasismu do daného diskursu.

Abstract:

The thesis is focused on the representation of Romani ethnic group in the articles of the Czech journal MF DNES. The analysed sample of texts contains articles about the events in Břeclav in 2012. At that time a fifteen year old boy was attacked there. According to his testimony, the attackers should have been Roma men, which caused anti-Roma mood and protests. MF DNES informed about that. Specificity of the sample of the texts lies in the fact that the boy denied his testimony later. He simulated the attack. In the analysis, among others, we are trying to find out whether the representation of Roma in the articles changed after this plot twist. The author of the thesis uses the tools of membership categorization analysis and critical discourse analysis. Therefore the output of the thesis contains also a description of the categorization of Romani ethnic group. In relation to the media representation of Roma the author is looking for the answers to the questions of application of the elements of dominance and imbalance through the ideological polarization "We" vs. "Them". The intersections of the (new) racist ideology into the given discourse are also the subjects of interest.
