Implementation of Solid State Drives to Enterprise Systems

Abstract:

Cieľom práce je analyzovať možnosti Solid State Drives (SSD), ako náhrada tradičných magnetických diskov(HDD), pre Enterprise servery s rôznymi požiadavkami ako zameranie na transakčné spracovávanie, multimédiá, vysoko výpočtové systémy, virtualizáciu a internetové služby. SSD sú vynikajúcim kandidátom pre úplnú náhradu HDD. Výkonnostné testy poukazujú na razantný výkonnostný skok v rozmedzí 5 až 100 násobku, v závislosti od typu testu. Na druhej strane nízka úložná kapacita, rýchle opotrebovanie a pomerne vysoká cena za GB sú závažne problémy, ktoré limitujú absolútne zavedenie SSD technológie. Požiadavky virtualizačných a internet serverov už teraz umožňujú čiastočné nasadenie SSD. V prípade transakčných, multimediálnych a vysoko výpočtových systémov s ich špecifickými požiadavkami, nie je ešte možné plne nahradiť HDD za SSD. Je to spôsobené nekompatibilitou požiadaviek SSD ako je nízka úložná kapacita, vysoká cena či rýchle opotrebovanie. Niekoľko možných riešení je v práci identifikovaných, ktoré umožňujú nasadenie SDD pri všetkých typoch serverov. Práca takisto berie do úvahy NTFS, FAT32 a exFAT súborové systémy a ich vplyv na výkon SSD.

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to analyze possibility of Solid State Drives (SSD) as a potential replacement of traditional magnetic hard drives (HDD) for application/role specific servers with various requirements with focus on transactional processing, multimedia, high performance computing, virtualization and Internet/Network Servers. The SSDs are great candidates for complete replacement of HDDs. The performance results from the experiments shows a performance gain from 5 to 100 times depending on the type of tests. However, the low storage capacity, fast wear and high price per GB are still significant drawbacks that limit the unconditional deployment of SSDs in all enterprise systems. Requirements of the Virtualization and Internet/Network servers allow deploying only SSD solutions. The Transactional processing, Multimedia and High performance servers have different requirements that are not yet fully compatible with SSDs as these types of servers require high storage capacity at the lowest price with low wear rate. There are multiple solutions identified in this work that allow successful deployment of SSDs in these systems. The thesis also considers configurations of several file systems such as NTFS, FAT32 exFAT and their effects on SSD performance.
