The Union of Visual Artists and its Journal Dílo (Work)

Abstract:

V této bakalářské diplomové práci se budu snažit zhodnotit činnost uměleckého spolku Jednota umělců výtvarných. Ta byla založena v Praze roku 1898. Pokusím se nastínit její přínos českému umění stejně jako přínos spolkového časopisu Dílo od roku 1902 jimi vydávaném. Své bádání zaměřím na období od vzniku Jednoty do roku 1914, ačkoli Jednota působila až do roku 1952. Práce bude navazovat na publikace z posledních 15 let věnované uměleckým seskupením epochy fin de siecle a jejich periodikům: spolku Mánes a Volným směrům, české dekadenci a Moderní revui, jakož i katolické moderně a Novému životu. Pozornost bude věnována především následujícím otázkám: program Jednoty, její zahraniční vzory a preferovaní domácí autoři, kriteria výtvarné kritiky v časopise Dílo, umělecká orientace Jednoty ve srovnání s obdobnými uskupeními ve střední Evropě. Jelikož zatím není dostupná žádná publikace o Jednotě umělců výtvarných ani problematice, kterou se chci zabývat v této práci, budou hlavním zdrojem informací excerpta z časopisu Dílo.

Abstract:

The Union of the Visual Artists was founded in 1898 in Prague. Among the founders of the Union, we can find Vojtěch Hynais, František Ženíšek, Václav Brožík, Josef Maudr, Emanuel Krescenc Liška and Josef Václav Myslbek, who was also the first chairman of the Union. Right from the beginning the Union tried to promote the national program. They made an effort to support Bohemian artists, either contemporary and also the one from the past so that public is well aware o them. The members of the Union did not deny the leading position of western artists on the artistic field, but encouraged artists to be more inspired by their own country rather than just witlessly copy the foreign modern models. This conservative attitude of theirs got them into arguments with other artistic groups functioning in the Bohemia in the fin de siècle period; especially with members of the Mánes society who at the time represented modernism. In 1902, the Union started to publish a monthly which name was Dílo. The monthly's subtitle was “List, věnovaný původní tvorbě české, hlavně dekorativní”. The paper promoted opinions and attitudes of the Union and consisted of essays and articles concerning art. It also included art critique and painting reproduction. The leading figure in editorial staff was painter, graphic artist and writer Alois Kalvoda who extended the program to be not purely Bohemian but also Slavonic at the same time.
