Embarrassment in attitudes of psychology students to mental health problems

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá interním, externím a reflektovaným studem v postojích studentů psychologie k problémům duševního zdraví v kontextu jejich rodiny a komunity, ve které žijí. Dále sleduje vztah mezi studem a profesní angažovaností v pomáhající profesi. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo celkem 117 studentů psychologie Filozofické fakulty Masarykovy univerzity. Výsledky ukázaly, že studenti vnímají postoje k duševnímu zdraví v závislosti na sociální vzdálenosti. Širší komunitě, ve které žijí, připisují negativnější postoje než rodině, od které očekávají vstřícnější přijetí. 75% studentů psychologie by se za vlastní psychické potíže v různé míře stydělo, obavy z dopadu případné vlastní psychické nemoci na rodinu vyjádřilo kolem 80% studentů. Naopak 85% studentů vyjádřilo přesvědčení, že by nepociťovali žádný stud za svého psychicky nemocného blízkého příbuzného. Profesní angažovanost v pomáhající profesi je v pozitivním vztahu s mírou reflektovaného studu (R = 0,40; p<0,01), vztah mezi angažovaností a mírou interního či externího studu se neprokázal. Výsledky přispějí ke zmapování postojů českých studentů psychologie k problémům duševního zdraví a studu obsaženého v nich, a dále poslouží v mezinárodním srovnávacím výzkumu.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with internal, external and reflected shame in attitudes of the students of psychology to problems of mental health in context of their family and community in which they live. Further, it observes the relationship between shame and professional commitment in a helping profession. The research sample was made up of 117 of psychology students of Faculty of Arts Masaryk University. The results shown that students perceive attitudes to mental health according to social distance. They attribute more negative attitudes to wider community than to family from which they expect more accommodating reception. 75% students of psychology would be to varying degrees ashamed of their own mental health problems, about 80% of students expressed worry about impact of their own eventual mental illness on their family. On the contrary 85% expressed conviction that they would not feel any shame for their mentally ill close relative. Professional commitment in a helping profession is in positive relation with degree of reflected shame (R = 0,40; p<0,01), relation between commitment and amount of internal or external shame was not proven. The results will contribute to mapping of attitudes of Czech psychology students to mental health problems and shame included in them and also it will help in international comparative research.
