Strategic partnership with South Africa: comparing China and the European Union

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je zjistit a porovnat míru komplexity strategických partnerství Čína-JAR a EU-JAR. Za účelem naplnění tohoto cíle byla položena odpovídající výzkumná otázka, tedy které strategické partnerství z dvojice Čína-JAR a EU-JAR vykazuje větší míru komplexity. První kapitola obsahuje rešerši již publikované literatury, v druhé kapitole je práce teoreticky vymezena a je představen výzkumný design. Třetí kapitola přibližuje politiku aktérů v oblasti navazování strategických partnerství a ve čtvrté kapitole je komplexita dvou vybraných strategických partnerství zkoumána po tematických kategoriích. V páté kapitole jsou výsledky analýzy vyhodnoceny a uvedeny do kontextu. V rámci dvoupřípadové komparativní studie a s pomocí analytické tabulky konstitutivních prvků je vyvozen závěr, že větší míru komplexity vykazuje strategické partnerství Číny a JAR. Znatelné rozdíly oproti strategickému partnerství EU a JAR se projevuje v oblasti hodnotové konvergence, bezpečnostní spolupráce, rovnocenného vnímání vztahu a frekvence neformálních interakcí.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to identify and compare the level of complexity of China-South Africa (SA) and EU-SA strategic partnerships. In order to achieve this objective, the corresponding research question was posed, i.e. which strategic partnership of the China-SA and EU-SA duo exhibits a greater degree of complexity. The first chapter contains a review of the already published literature, while the second chapter provides the theoretical framework of the thesis and introduces the research design. The third chapter introduces the actors' politics in establishing strategic partnerships and the fourth chapter examines the complexity of the two selected strategic partnerships along thematic categories. In chapter five, the results of the analysis are evaluated and put into context. Within the framework of a two-case comparative study and with the help of the analytical table of constitutive elements, it is concluded that the strategic partnerships of China and SA exhibit a greater degree of complexity. Notable differences from the EU-SA strategic partnership are manifested in the areas of value convergence, security cooperation, perceived equal relationship and frequency of informal interactions.
