The Model of Career and Political Preference Based on the Social Dominance Theory and its Implications on Prejudice

Abstract:

The primary objective of this thesis is to examine the reliability and validity of the Czech form of the Social Dominance Orientation (SDO), determination of the adequacy of a single-factor, or eventually a two-factor approach to it and the subsequent verification of the hypotheses concerning the model of the Social Dominance theory with regard to political and career preference. The study is based on the assumption that students select their field of study in congruence with the size of SDO and the assumption of institutional socialization which, based on the field of study, will have either a positive or negative impact on the SDO, which is an important construct for understanding intergroup relations. The sample is constituted by 654 individuals - university students, who filled in the online questionnaire. Relations between the variables were analyzed by correlation, variance analysis, factor analysis and logistic regression. The results confirmed an adequate reliability and validity of the range of Social Dominance Orientation, as well as the adequacy of the two-factor approach to the SDO. We validated the hypothesis regarding the congruence of the field of study and the SDO, however, we proved unable to confirm the influence of university socialization on the SDO. Furthermore, the results also affirmed the independence of the SDO from personal characteristics.

Abstract:

Hlavným cieľom tejto práce je preskúmanie reliability a validity českej verzie škály sociálne dominantnej orientácie (SDO), určenie vhodnosti jednofaktorového, prípadne dvojfaktorového prístupu k nej a následné overenie hypotéz vzťahúcich sa k modelu teórie sociálnej dominancie ohľadom politickej a kariérnej preferencie. Štúdia vychádza z predpokladu, že študenti si vyberajú študijný odbor v kongruencii s veľkosťou SDO a z predpokladu inštitucionálnej socializácie, ktorá bude mať podľa študijného odboru buď pozitívny, alebo negatívny vplyv na SDO, ktorá je významným konštruktom pre porozumenie medziskupinových vzťahov. Výskumný súbor tvorí 654 osôb, vysokoškolských študentov, ktorí participovali na vyplnení on-line dotazníku. Vzťahy medzi premennými boli analyzované prostredníctvom korelácie, analýzy rozptylu, faktorovej analýzy a logistickej regresie. Výsledky potvrdili adekvátnu reliabilitu a platnosť škály sociálne dominantnej orientácie, ako aj adekvátnosť dvojfaktorového prístupu k SDO. Potvrdili sme hypotézu ohľadom kongruencie študovaného odboru a SDO, no nepodarilo sa nám potvrdiť vplyv vysokoškolskej socializácie na SDO. Výsledky taktiež potvrdili nezávislosť SDO od osobnostných vlastností.
