Analysis of product and exports diversification of the EMU countries in context of the OCA theory

Abstract:

V roce 1969 Peter Kenen obohatil tehdy formující se teorii optimálních oblastí (Optimum Currency Area, OCA) zkoumáním asymetrických šoků monetárních unií s různými stupni diverzifikace produktu a exportů. Tato práce se zabývá tímto Kenenovým pravidlem, a to dále rozpracovává na případové studii eurozóny (euro area, EA). Cílem práce je analýza zaměstnanosti, produktu a exportů devatenácti členských zemí EA a individuálně posoudit splnění Kenenova pravidla. Toho je dosaženo prostřednictvím stanovení středních hodnot pro strukturu exportu a jeho destinací a měření celkové diverzifikace a odchylky od střední hodnoty. Dalším cílem práce je navrhnou metody vyhodnocení shromážděných dat a dát doporučení. Výsledkem práce je jednoznačné odmítnutí splnění pravidla pro Řecko a identifikace zásadních rozdílů ekonomik Irska, Malty, Kypru, Lotyšska, Litvy, Lucemburska, Slovenska a Slovinska. Autor dále doporučuje přehodnocení fiskálních transferů EU a přesměrování jejich priorit.

Abstract:

In 1969, Peter Kenen extended the OCA theory by looking at the different degrees of diversification of national production in the economy. This thesis focuses primarily on the application of this theory of the current development of the Eurozone. The goal of the thesis is to prove whether certain domestic markets have balanced economic outcome in correlation with other Eurozone members. Each country is analyzed in areas of their production, export and particular employment structure. If the Kenen’s rules were met, statistical analysis would be used to find evidence. The key method is to determine a standard deviation from median data. The measurement of the data will follow up in the next part of the thesis which will create an evaluation and a set of measurements for particular markets. The findings for specific markets would serve as a point zero in terms of reshaping the structure and weight of their key export segments. The results are to reject the rule fulfillment for Greece and identifying critical areas for Ireland, Malta, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakian, Slovenia and Luxemburg. The author further suggests restructuring and rethinking EU fiscal transfers.
