Collaboration with the Nazi regime in Klaus Mann's Mephisto

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with literary depiction of colloboration with the Nazi regime in Klaus Mann's novel "Mephisto" (1936). The thesis focuses mainly on psychological motivation of the novel's protagonist, Hendrik Höfgen, for his actions as he is confronted with the Nazi regime. Since he is an actor, the following questions are considered: What role plays the fact, that Hendrik Höfgen ist an actor? Does he hold a privilled position in society? If so, what is the character of his privillege? Besides the topic of collaboration, the novel relfects German artistic and bohemian circles. Therefore, the thesis deals with the question how political evetns in Germany affected art and how artists responded to them. In the last chapter, the reception of the novel in Czechoslovakia - one of the first countries, where the novel was translated from German and published - is analyzed by evaluating contemporary reviews.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá literárním zobrazením kolaborace s nacistickým režimem v románu Klause Manna "Mefisto" (1936). Zkoumána je především psychologická motivace protagonisty románu, Hendrika Höfgena, pro jeho jednání ve střetu s nacistickým režimem. Jelikož se jedná o herce, jsou při analýze zohledněny následující otázky: Jakou roli hraje skutečnost, že je Hendrik Höfgen herec? Zaujímá ve společnosti privilegované postavení? Pokud ano, v čem spočívá jeho privilegovanost? Kromě tématu kolaborace je v románu reflektováno německé umělecké prostředí. Práce se tedy zabývá také tím, jak se pod vlivem politických změn umění v Německu vyvíjelo a jak umělci na tyto změny reagovali. Jedna kapitola práce je věnována recepci románu v Československu, jedné z prvních zemí, kde byl román přeložen a vydán. Zhodnoceny jsou dobové recenze.
