Effect of thermal modification on vapor sorption in wood

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této bakalářské práce bylo zkoumání vlivu tepelné modifikace a sorpce vodních par ve dřevě buku lesního (Fagus sylvatica). Tepelná modifikace byla prováděna v komoře Katres, která se nachází v Útěchově. Na tento pokus se použily vzorky, jež byly tepelně upraveny v různých teplotách (220 ͦ C, 200 ͦ C, 180 ͦ C) a neobsahovaly žádné vady. Dále byly bukové vzorky nařezány na velikost 39x15x10 mm a nakrájeny na tenké plátky (8 µm). Ty se poté nastříhaly a vložily se do DVS zařízení, jenž hraje důležitou roli v tomto pokusu. DVS zařízení zkoumá dynamickou sorpci vodních par. Na základě získaných hodnot byly vyhodnoceny tabulky a grafy pro hmotnostní úbytek dřeva, rovnovážnou vlhkost, adsorpci, desorpci a hysterezi sorpcí. Ze získaných dat je patrné, že tepelná modifikace ovlivňuje vlastnosti dřeva. Příkladem potvrzujícím toto tvrzení jsou výsledné hodnoty rovnovážné vlhkosti, které byly vlivem vyšší teploty sníženy na 11,86 %. Pro porovnání u tepelně nemodifikovaného referenčního vzorku bylo naměřeno 22,78 %. Výsledky pokusu byly rozebrány a porovnány v diskuzi. V závěrečné fázi této práce byly rozebrány možnosti využití metody tepelné modifikace dřeva ve stavitelství. V literárním přehledu je nastíněna a rozebrána problematika související s daným tématem. Nedílnou součástí bylo také sepsat metodiku neboli popsat podrobný postup provedeného měření.

Abstract:

The main aim of this bachelor thesis was to study the influence of thermal modification and sorption of water vapour in wood beech (Fagus sylvatica). The thermal modification was carried out in the Katres chamber, located in Útěchov. For this experiment were used samples which were heat-treated in different temperatures (220 °C, 200 °C, 180 ͦ C) and they did not contain any defects. After that, the beech samples were cut into the 39x15x10 mm pieces and thinly sliced (8 μm). Then they were cut and put into the DVS device, which plays an important role in this experiment. DVS device researches dynamic water vapour sorption. Tables and graphs for wood weight loss, equilibrium humidity, adsorption, desorption and sorption hysteresis were evaluated based on the gained values. The obtained data show that thermal modification affects the properties of the wood. Example confirming this claim are the resulting values of equilibrium humidity, which were reduced to 11,86 % due to the higher temperature. In comparison, the non-heat-treated sample measured value is 22,78 %. The results of the experiment were analysed and compared in the discussion. In the final part of this work the possibilities of using the method of thermal modification of wood were discussed. The literary overview outlines and discusses issues related to the topic. An inseparable part was also to write a methodology of this work and describe the detailed procedure of the measurements which were made.
