Culture in the net. Independent initiatives in new media art and culture in Bratislava since 2000

Abstract:

In the diploma thesis titled Culture in the net. Independent initiatives in new media art and culture in Bratislava since 2000 I am dealing with civil activities in the field of the presentation of new media art and culture in Bratislava since 2000. A characteristic feature of these initiatives is the way they were created „from the bottom“, they are not constituted by state but made up of individuals and communities interested in enriching the local cultural environment. This initiatives are mostly important also on the international level. I interprete a community like a characteristic of the civic initiatives „from the bottom“ in Bratislava from the perspective of the network theory. All around the world the turn to new media art and culture took place earlier. I chose the year 2000 as a starting point, in which there were a rise of independent organisations of this kind in Bratislava. How does the process of development look like in this area of culture? How does the network of independent initiatives in the new media art and culture look like in Bratislava today? How do the activities of independent culture penetrate the institutions established by the State? The aim of my diploma thesis is therefore to explore and map the structure of the network of independent cultural scene focused on the new media art in Bratislava in a specified period of time and maybe this paper can open a space for a similar research on a national level.

Abstract:

V magisterskej diplomovej práci Kultúra v sieti Nezávislé iniciatívy v umení a kultúre nových médií v Bratislave po roku 2000 sa zaoberám občianskymi aktivitami na poli prezentácie novomediálneho umenia a kultúry v Bratislave po roku 2000. Charakteristickou črtou týchto iniciatív je, že vznikali takzvane “zdola”, nie sú zriaďované štátom, ale tvorené jednotlivcami a komunitami so záujmom o obohatenie lokálneho kultúrneho prostredia. Sú však častokrát dôležité aj v medzinárodnom význame. Komunitnú povahu bratislavských občianskych iniciatív “zdola” interpretujem z pohľadu teórie sietí. Vo svete obrat ku kultúre a umeniu nových médií prebiehal už skôr. Rok 2000 som si zvolila ako východiskový bod, kedy v Bratislave vzniklo viacero takto orientovaných nezávislých organizácii. Aký bol vývoj v tejto oblasti? Ako vyzerá sieť nezávislých iniciatív v umení a kultúre nových médií v Bratislave dnes? Akým spôsobom prenikajú aktivity nezávislých iniciatív aj do štátom zriaďovaných inštitúcií? Cieľom diplomovej práce je teda preskúmať a zmapovať štruktúru siete nezávislej kultúrnej scény venujúcej sa novomediálnemu umeniu v Bratislave vo vymedzenom časovom období a vytvoriť tým možno aj priestor pre podobný výskum v celoslovenskom rozmere.
