Diffusion and change of beliefs about the Cathars during the activity of Conrad of Marburg

Abstract:

Ve středověku vznikala literatura popisující katary jako jednu z nejhorších herezí. V rámci odsuzování katarů docházelo až k jejich chápání jako uctívačů ďábla. Jako doklady těchto představ se od polemiků dochovaly prameny popisující uctívání ďábla. Tato bakalářská práce se zaměří na utváření a přenosy „ďábelského“ obrazu katarů oblasti jižní Francie do severního Porýní. Práce se pokusí objasnit, odkud se bere inovace z roku 1230, kdy se poprvé setkáváme s prameny, které vyobrazují ďábla, přesněji řečeno Lucifera, jako spasitele. Práce bude pracovat s příklady textů, které vykazují časovou a geografickou blízkost. K nim patří papežská bula Vox in Rama, protikacířské texty z kodexu Sg. 974 ze Stiftsbibliothek v St. Gallenu. Pro potřeby komparace se staršími obrazy ďábelských katarů bude zapojena závěrečná část kodexu 9 z Dendermonde, líčící výslech démona během exorcismu. Všechny zmíněné texty popisují herezi bezprostředně fyzicky uctívající ďábla, ale až s rokem 1230, který úzce souvisí s vystoupením inkvizitora Konráda z Marburgu, se zásadním způsobem mění představy o uctívání ďábla heretiky, a také role tohoto uctívání ďábla v celé konstrukci hereze. Tato „inovace“ se týká buly Vox in Rama a protikacířských textů ze Sg. 974. Studie bude prostřednictvím porovnání těchto pramenů (Vox in Rama, Sg. 974 a závěrečnou část kodexu 9 z Dendermonde) sledovat konstrukci obrazu jakési „nové hereze“ uctívačů ďábla,vznikajícího během vystoupení Konráda z Marburgu.

Abstract:

In the middle ages a literature was being created, that described cathars as one of the worst heresy. While cathars were judged, it escalated to them being perceived as devil worshippers. Sources describing them as devil worshippers were a proof, that polemics had such notion. This thesis is focused on creating and spreading that devilish image of cathars between Southern France and Northen Rhineland. This thesis attempts to clarify where innovations were being created in 1230, when the first sources, that depict the devil (exactly Lucifer) as the saviour, started appearing. Thesis will work with examples of text that show time and geographic proximity. Those are the pope’s bull Vox in Rama and anti-heretic texts from codex Sg. 974 from Stiftsbibliothek in St. Gallen. For comparison with older depictions of devilish cathars the concluding part of codex 9 from Dendermonde will be used. All the mentioned texts described heresy imminently in a physical way worshiping the devil. However with the year 1230, which closely related to appearance of inquisitor Konrad von Marburg, started to change the perception of devil worshiping by heretics, and the role of this devil worshiping in the whole construction of heresy. This “innovation” relates to the bull Vox in Rama and anti-heretic texts from Sg. 974. The thesis though these sources (Vox in Rama, Sg. 974 and concluding part of codex 9 from Dendermonde) follows the construction of perceptions of cathars as a “new heresy” (devil worshipers), during the appearance of Konrad von Marburg.
