Prepositions and prepositional phrases and how they are treated in various syntactic frameworks

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce má za cíl popsat, jak se staví rozličné syntaktické přístupy k analýze předložek a předložkových frází. Pojetí předložek existuje hned několik, v práci se pracuje pouze s vybranými. Přístupy jsou rozděleny do dvou větví (závislostní a generativní), které obsahují dílčí teorie. Každá z nich je zvlášť analyzována. Kromě samotného popisu přístupů slouží k vysvětlení a porovnání také syntaktické stromy/grafy, které odráží vztahy jednotek v rámci svého přístupu. Lze vidět, jak jsou předložky v jednotlivých přístupech pojednávány. Teorie vycházející ze závislostní syntaxe jsou v některých aspektech nedostačující pro komplexnější analýzu, jelikož funkci předložek de facto ignorují. Naproti tomu syntax generativní využívající binární strukturu je konkrétnější a detailnější v oblasti hloubkové struktury předložkových frází.

Abstract:

The goal of this Bachelor thesis is to describe, how the different syntactic frameworks look at prepositions and prepositional phrases. There are many concepts of prepositions, but we work only with some of them. Frameworks are divided into two parts (dependency syntax and generative syntax). In addition to the description of approaches, syntactic trees/graphs are also used for explanation and comparison, reflecting the syntactic relationships within the respective approaches. One can observe how prepositions are treated in different approaches. The theories based on dependency syntax are insufficient in some aspects for a more comprehensive analysis, as they effectively ignore the function of prepositions. On the other hand, generative syntax, which employs binary structures, are more specific and detailed in terms of the deep structure of prepositional phrases.
