Symmetries and conservation laws in variational theories

Abstract:

In this thesis, we study Noether's theorem. In the first few chapters, we introduce the mathematical formalism of fibred manifolds, vector fields, and differential forms widely used in theoretical physics. Next, we will present Noether's theorem, the correspondence between symmetries and conservation laws(noether currents - quantities conserved along the prolongation of extremals), which is a~straightforward consequence of the variational principle. For the remaining part of the thesis, we are dealing with some variational theories. For such systems of classical mechanics and field theory, we investigate their symmetries and noether currents. As an elementary problem, we deal with harmonic oscillator where we are illustrating the whole formalism. Another problem is the general lagrangian of the classical mechanical system. In a~field theory, we are investigating the lagrangian of the wave equation in detail for $n-$dimensions and also dealing with symmetries of the wave equation itself in $2-$dimensions. Finally, we are investigating symmetries and noether currents for special cases of non-relativistic and relativistic quantum mechanics, whereas we interpret the results where it is possible. Besides simple problems (linear harmonic oscillator among other things, seems to be an extremely suitable teaching model) we are dealing with symmetries of the corresponding equations of motion. So, we are presenting a solution to the Noether-Bessel-Hagen equation and its relation to the symmetry of the lagrangian. In this sense, our results are original and point to the possibility of continuing this work.

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci se zabýváme teorémem Emmy Noetherové. V první části stručně vyložíme matematický formalismus fibrovaných prostorů, vektorových polí a diferenciálních forem, který se používá v mnoha partiích teoretické fyziky. Dále představíme teorém Emmy Noetherové, který je v našem formalismu přímým důsledkem variačního principu, dál pak vztah mezi symetriemi a~ zákony zachování (noetherovské toky – veličiny zachovávající se podél řešení pohybových rovnic). Ve zbývající části práce se zabýváme některými variačními teoriemi. Pro odpovídající systémy klasické mechaniky a teorie pole studujeme jejich symetrie a noetherovské toky. Základním příkladem je harmonický oscilátor, na kterém ilustrujeme výše uvedený formalismus v úplnosti a následně řešíme obecný lagrangián klasické mechaniky. V teorii pole podrobně řešíme lagrangián vlnové rovnice v $n-$rozměrech a~ také symetrie samotné vlnové rovnice ve $2-$rozměrech. Řešíme také konkrétní systémy nerelativistické a relativistické kvantové mechaniky, přičemž výsledky fyzikálně interpretujeme tam, kde je to schůdné. Okrem toho sa v jednodušších případech (zejména lineární harmonický oscilátor, který je mj. vhodným „výukovým“ modelem) zabýváme symetriemi odpovídajících pohybových rovnic. Prezentujeme tedy řešení rovnice Noetherové-Bessel-Hagenovy a jeho souvislost se symetriemi lagranžiánu. V tomto smyslu jsou naše výsledky původní a ukazují na možnosti pokračování této práce.
