New World Diplomacy: A study into past policy from Australia and USA and the current influence on refugee's.

Anotace:

This thesis endeavors to explore the complex relationship between past and present day policies from the United States and Australia. Using two historical case studies from both countries will help determine if present actions are inadvertently influenced by past policies. I develop and define a contextual definition to help explain these actions and deem it “New World Diplomacy.” Through textual analysis of historical documents, interviews and national policy it will help cultivate the notion that my concept is ever present in international relations. This is done with specific regards of juxtaposing past treatment and policies from aboriginal cultures from the US and Australia to and comparing them to today's refugee policies. Both cases vary in outcome because of the complicated political rhetoric and domestic public perception towards this issue. This conclusion has implications for the countries to continue their deterrence policies in order to maintain their sovereign power. This thesis will provide useful in explaining actions from “New World” countries and further enhance why this specific type of diplomacy has the power to influence international policies.
