"My child takes drugs":Narrative analysis of stories of mothers with drug addicted children

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na téma prožitků matek dětí závislých na drogách. V teoretické části se autorka zabývá rizikovým chováním adolescentů a jeho přechodem v drogovou závislost, ve stěžejní kapitole této části rozebírá téma drogové závislosti v rodinném kontextu. Ve výzkumné části se věnuje narativní analýze šesti příběhů matek závislých dětí. Analýza probíhá na třech úrovních: ve fázi „prvního čtení“ (holisticko-obsahové interpretační perspektivy) se autorka zaměřuje na jednotlivé příběhy jako na celky - zkoumá, „o čem“ ženy vypráví, jakou mají v příběhu „roli“, jaká je zápletka příběhu, jakého je příběh „žánru“ či „tvaru“ apod.; v rámci této analýzy se jednotlivé příběhy jeví jako jedinečné, velmi specifické. Ve fázi „druhého čtení“ autorka příběhy zkoumá z hlediska jejich kontinuity v čase a nalézá tzv. „obecný scénář“ (sestávající z osmi stádií). Ve fázi „třetího čtení“ (kategoriálně-obsahové interpretační perspektivy) autorka v příbězích odhaluje mnoho společných témat a dále zkoumá jejich variabilitu, tj. jak se k daným tématům jednotlivé matky vztahují. Celkově je pro matky toto období náročné a vyčerpávající; v příbězích zažívají velkou míru stresu, strachu a ohrožení, musí aktivně řešit a vyrovnávat se s problémy, se kterými se dosud nesetkaly. Ačkoliv prožitky těchto matek jsou velmi různorodé, navzájem jsou si jejich příběhy v určitých ohledech podobné.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the theme of experience of mothers, whose children have got problems with drug addiction. In the theoretical part, the author deals with the topic of risk behavior of adolescents and the transition to drug addiction, which is further described in detail. The key chapter in this part is the one dealing with the theme of drugs in a family. In the empirical part, the author focuses on narrative analysis of the stories of six women whose child has or recently had a problem with addiction to drugs. The stories are analyzed at three levels: in the „first reading“ (holistic-content interpretative perspective) the author wonders “about what” the story is, which “role” the mother plays in it, what the plot of the story is, a “genre” and a “shape” of the story and so on; the stories appear to be unique, highly specific. Within the „second reading“ the author seeks for some similarities in time and finds a „common scenario“ (consisting of eight stages). In the „third reading“ (categorical-content interpretative perspective), the author reveals many common themes and wonders what the relations of the mothers to these themes are. For mothers this period is very demanding and exhausting; they experience high levels of stress, fear and threats, they have to proactively deal with problems they have not yet faced. Although the experiences of these mothers were very diverse, their stories are somewhat similar.
