Tattoo and scarification as instruments of culture transfer to the body

Abstract:

V této práci popisuji způsoby, kterými se kultura vpracovává do lidského těla, a to na příkladech funkcí a motivací trvalých tělesných modifikací v odlišných kulturních kontextech. Zaměřuji se konkrétně na tetování a skarifikaci, které považuji za nástroje zprostředkovávající a přenášející kulturní poznání do lidského těla. Pracuji s procesy semiotizace a disciplinace, kterými kultura tělo zpracovává a jež se v souvislosti s tělesnými modifikacemi vzájemně překrývají. Mapuji tak o kulturu obohacený příběh rozmanité tetovací a jizvící praxe.

Abstract:

In this thesis, I describe the ways in which culture is incorporated into the human body, on the examples of functions and motivations of permanent bodily modifications in different cultural contexts. I focus specifically on tattooing and scarification, which I consider to be tools that mediate and transfer cultural knowledge into the human body. I work with the processes of semiotization and discipline, by which culture processes the body and which overlap in connection with bodily modifications. I thus map a culture-enriched story of various tattoo and scarring practices.
