Stylistic and formal elements of chosen artworks by Baz Luhrmann

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce se věnuje specifičnosti vyjadřovacích prostředků Baze Luhrmanna a jejich využití v divadelní, filmové a televizní produkci či při tvorbě reklamních spotů, a to v návaznosti na Luhrmannův osobitý autorský styl v rámci určitých stylistických a formálních postupů. Následně se konkrétně vybraná Luhrmannova umělecká díla stala předmětem komparativní analýzy. Hlavním cílem práce bylo postihnout právě ony charakteristické prvky Luhrmannovi vlastní a jejich využití v prostředí různých komunikačních médiích. Následně jsme provedli strukturalistickou analýzu námi vybraných děl v návaznosti na Borwellovo definování stylu prostřednictvím specifické práce s kamerou, střihem, zvukem a mizanscénou, přičemž jsme rovněž k rozboru zahrnuli i složky týkající se narace a také vizuálního zpracování díla. V první části práce jsme se soustředili na jednotlivé námi vybrané díla Luhrmannovi umělecké tvorby z daných tvůrčích odvětvích v rámci metodologických okruhů, jež jsme si již dříve určili. V druhé části se zaměřili na komparativní analýzu všech námi vybraných děl, přičemž jsme primárně věnovali jejich analogickým a diametrálním stylistickým a formálním vlastnostem, na základě kterých jsme došli k jistým poznatkům. Následně jsme v návaznosti na části analytické poznatky v záběru celkově shrnuli a vyvodili závěr.

Abstract:

The Master thesis deals with the specifics of Baze Luhrmann´s means of expression and their use in theatre, film and television production as well as in the commercials in connection with the Luhrmann´s distinctive author style in terms of stylistic and formal approach. Subsequently, the selected Luhrmann's artwork has been the subject of comparative analysis. The main aim of the work was to describe the characteristic elements of Luhrmann's work and their use in communication media. Then we implemented a structuralist analysis of the works we selected, in connection with Borwell’s definition of style including the work with camera, editing, sound, and mizanscene, furthermore we also included the narrative components as well as the visual processing of the work. In the first part of the analysis we focused on the individual works of Luhrmann's artistic production from within the frame of each secions we have previously defined. In the second part, we focused on a comparative analysis of all of chosen works, and we primarily devoted to their analogous and diametral stylistic and formal characteristics, on the basis of which we reached the findings. Finally, we have summarized the analytical findings.
