Cursed images and their character in digital culture

Abstract:

Cursed images jsou typem internetového memu a fenoménu, který si v posledních letech v digitální kultuře získal velkou oblibu. Tyto znepokojivé a děsivé obrázky často obsahují bizarní, strašidelný nebo nevysvětlitelný obsah, který má v divácích vyvolat pocit neklidu a nepohodlí. I když se cursed images staly oblíbeným prvkem internetové kultury, jejich původ, účastnící, situace a významy zůstávají do značné míry záhadné a nepoznatelné. Ve své práci zkoumám fenomén takových snímků a této cursed estetiky z pohledu fotografie a jejich významu pro digitální kulturu, jejich psychologický dopad na diváka a způsoby, jakými zpochybňují naše předpoklady o realitě, vnímání obrazu a médiu fotografie.

Abstract:

Cursed images are a type of internet meme that have gained great popularity in the digital culture in recent years. These unsettling and eerie images often feature bizarre, creepy or inexplicable content that is intended to evoke a sense of unease and discomfort in viewers. While cursed images have become a popular fixture of internet culture, their origins, participators, situations and meanings remain largely mysterious and unknownable. This work explores the phenomenon and aesthetics of cursed images, examining their significance in digital culture, psychological impact to the viewer and the ways in which they challenge our assumptions about reality, perception of images and the medium of photography.
