The Linguistic Analysis of New Year´s Speeches of Czech Presidents

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá lingvistickou analýzou novoročních projevů prezidentů Václava Havla a Václava Klause. Autorka práce se zaměřuje na vývoj tohoto specifického rétorického žánru a novoroční projevy obou prezidentů zařazuje do širších politických a společenských souvislostí. Nejdříve se zmiňuje o tradici novoročních prezidentských projevů v československém a posléze českém prostředí. Dále v jednotlivých kapitolách popisuje osm složek promluvy tak, jak byly definovány Dellem Hymesem v The SPEAKING Model, který byl zvolen jako metodologický rámec celé analýzy. Jelikož cílem této práce není pouze vymezit žánr novoročních prezidentských projevů obecně, ale rovněž vlastní analýza zkoumaných textů, věnuje se autorka podobněji také oblasti klíčových slov prezidentských projevů. Získané výsledky pak vzájemně vyhodnocuje a porovnává s výsledky popsanými v sekundární literatuře. Tato práce se rovněž věnuje analýze rétorických jazykových prostředků, uvádí výčet tropů a figur, které posilují rétoričnost zkoumaných textů, a zaměřuje se na vymezení norem ovlivňující volbu lexikálních i stylistických prostředků, které se podílejí na výsledné podobě komunikátů.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the linguistic analysis of New Year?s Speeches of presidents Václav Havel and Václav Klaus. The author of the thesis focuses on the description of the development of this specific rhetorical genre; the New Year?s speeches of both presidents are classified in a broader political and social context. First of all, the tradition of New Year?s presidential speeches in the Czechoslovak and later Czech environment is described. For a more detailed analysis of individual texts The SPEAKING Model by Dell Hymese has been chosen as the methodological framework, according to which all eight speech components are described in particular chapters. Since the aim of this work is not only to define the genre of New Year?s presidential speeches in general but also to analyse the particular texts, the author focuses on keywords of analyzed speeches. Furthermore, the received results are evaluated and compared with the results described in the scientific literature. Finally, this thesis deals with the analysis of rhetorical devices which are used to make the speeches rhetorical stronger, and focuses on the definition of norms that influenced the choice of the stylistic devices that participated in the final form of particular speeches.
