Comparison of Handwriting Recognition Systems

Abstract:

Možnost automatického rozpoznávání ručně psaných textů vytváří obrovské příležitosti pro zvýšení produktivity pro mnoho komerčních i nekomerčních organizací. Například automatická digitalizace historických rukopisů pro knihovny může pomoci sdílet znalosti s celým světem. A každá firma, která používá ručně psané formuláře, bude mít prospěch z automatického rozpoznání obsahu formuláře. Cílem této práce je prozkoumat současnou situaci na trhu se softwarem HTR, technologiemi a ručně psanými textovými datovými sadami. K dosažení tohoto cíle byl proveden přehled nejmodernějších systémů rozpoznávání rukopisu. Poté jsem provedl implementaci skriptu HTR založeného na pythonském balíčku PyLaia a pro účely srovnání jsem použil připravený HTR software Transkribus. Výsledky obou aplikací byly porovnány pomocí chybovosti znaků a slov. Výsledky byly 7% CER, 24% WER a 9% CER, 33% WER, což ukazuje, že ačkoli je HTR řešitelný problém, k dokonalosti má stále daleko. Na základě výsledku byl učiněn závěr o současné situaci HTR a návrhy pro budoucí výzkum.

Abstract:

The possibility of automatic recognition of handwritten texts creates enormous opportunities for enhancing productivity for many commercial and non-commercial organizations. For example, the automatic digitizing of historical manuscripts for libraries can help to share knowledge with the whole world. And any business which uses handwritten forms will benefit from automatic recognition of the form’s content. The goal of this thesis is to explore the current situation in the HTR software market, technologies, and handwritten text datasets. To achieve this was done the overview of the state-of-the-art of handwriting recognition systems. After that, I made implementation of the HTR script based on the Python package PyLaia and for comparison purposes used ready-to-use HTR software Transkribus. The results of both applications were compared using character and word error rates. The results were 7% CER, 24% WER and 9% CER, 33% WER respectively, showing that while HTR is a resolvable problem, it is still far from being perfect. Based on the result was done conclusion about the current situation of HTR and suggestions for future research.
