A Comparison of the System of Consonant Clusters in Selected Norwegian Dialects

Abstract:

The purpose of this work is to compare the phonotactic systems of selected Norwegian dialects. Each chosen dialect represents one of the four main dialectical regions in Norway. The starting point is standardized Norwegian, the status of which is also discussed in this work. The comparison of these five systems should reveal which dialect has the richest stock of consonant clusters. The further goal of this work is to ascertain which dialect most closely mirrors the written form of the language- in other words, the dialect with the least assimilation. This work is notionally divided into two parts, those being theoretical and analytical. The first chapter in the introductory part deals with, as already mentioned, the phenomenon of standardized Norwegian. This concept is problematic as there is no standard spoken version of the language. For the purpose of simplification, this „standardtalemål“ is viewed as a dialect. The following chapter focuses on the division of Norwegian dialects. This division is based on the traditional division of dialects, but with special emphasis on differences in consonant systems. Phonotactic rules in Norwegian, and also in general, are discussed in the next chapter. The theoretical part concludes with a chapter dealing with the implementation of consonant phonemes. Here the starting point is, once again, standardized Norwegian. The analytical part first discusses consonant clusters which initially occur in words, followed by clusters occurring at the end of words. The chapter dealing with consonant clusters at the end of words is more extensive and is divided according to groups with two, three and four consonants.

Cílem této práce je porovnat fonotaktické systémy ve vybraných norských dialektech. Každý vybraný dialekt reprezentuje jednu ze čtyř hlavních dialektových oblastí Norska. Výchozím bodem je však standardizovaná norština, jejíž status je v práci také diskutován. Porovnání těchto pěti systémů má poukázat na to, který dialekt má nejbohatší inventář konsonantických skupin. Dalším bodem práce je najít dialekt, který nejvíce zachovává podobu psané formy jazyka i v mluvě, to znamená dialekt s nejmenšími asimilacemi. Práce je pomyslně rozdělena na dvě části, a to část teoretickou a analytickou. První kapitola v úvodní části se zabývá, jak již bylo řečeno, fenoménu standardizovaná norština. Tento pojem je v norštině problematický, protože oficiální standardizovaná mluvená řeč neexistuje. Pro zjednodušení je v práci na tento „standardtalemål“ nahlíženo jako na dialekt. Další kapitola se věnuje rozdělení norských dialektů. Toto rozdělení je založeno na tradičním dělení dialektů, ale zvláštní důraz je kladen na rozdíly v systému konsonantů. V další kapitole jsou diskutována fonotaktická pravidla jak v norském jazyce, tak i obecně. Pomyslnou teoretickou část uzavírá kapitola, která se zabývá realizaci konsonantických fonémů. Zde je výchozím bodem opět standardizovaná norština. V analytické části jsou nejdříve prodiskutovány počáteční skupiny konsonantů ve slovech a následně skupiny vyskytujících se na koncích slov. Kapitola věnující se skupinám konsonantů na koncích slov je rozsáhlejší a je dělena dle skupin s dvěma, třemi a čtyřmi konsonanty.
