Children´s toys as a part of gender socialization

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce "hračky jako součást genderové socializace" poukazuje na problematiku genderových preferencí hraček dětí předškolního věku. Cílem práce bylo zjistit, zda si děti vybírají hračky typické pro jejich pohlaví, jako jsou panenky či kočárky v případě dívek či auta a zbraně v případě chlapců. Tato preference dětí je ovlivněna mnoha faktory. Jedním z nich jsou rodiče, kteří na dítě mají v jeho raném věku největší vliv. Dále to jsou také vrstevníci, literatura, mateřská škola či učitelé/ky. Práce je rozdělena na teoretickou a empirickou část s výsledky. Teoretická část popisuje genderovou socializaci, jenž je spojená s genderovou identitou a genderovou rolí. Skrze socializaci si děti také osvojují chování, které je spojeno s jejich genderem. Na genderovou socializaci se zaměřuji zvláště prostřednictvím rodičů a vrstevníků, ti mají na dítě největší vliv a děti se snaží se s nimi ztotožnit. Práce vychází především z kognitivně vývojových teorií a práce Sandry Bem, které vysvětlují lidské chování skrze vliv společnosti. Mimo rodičů, kteří mají na dítě největší vliv je škola dalším faktorem skrze, které se dítě socializuje a začleňuje do společnosti. V neposlední řadě je v práci popsána definice hraček, které jsou pro děti velice důležité. Výzkum byl realizován ve dvou mateřských školách, jeho cílem bylo zjistit, jaké hračky preferují děti předškolního věku a zda odpovídají jejich genderu. Práce prostřednictvím zúčastněného pozorování a doplňkové metody ankety komplexně popsala faktory, které mají vliv na výběr hraček u dětí z mateřských škol. Mateřské školy byly záměrně vybrány z odlišně velkých měst, pro následné porovnání těchto institucí. Během výzkumu bylo identifikováno několik faktorů, které zapříčiňují rozdílné genderové preference ve výběru hraček u dětí v předškolním věku. Prvním z nich je samotný prostor školek, který je genderově segregovaný, dále věk dětí a hračky samy o sobě. Rozdělený prostor školek má také vliv na společné hraní dívek a chlapců. Obě školky, které jsou v práci popsány, se totiž opírají o tradiční genderové vzorce. Na základě pozorování a analýzy ankety se v závěru objevuje, že děti si ve většině případů vybírají hračky odpovídající jejich genderu. To však neznamená, že si nehrají i s hračkami typické pro opačné pohlaví, jak uvádí i jejich rodiče. Tento fakt je ale mezi pohlavím rozdílný. Jsou to většinou dívky než chlapci, které si s těmito hračkami hrají. Práce svou pozornost zaměřuje také na to, zda hračky, které jsou předkládané dětem jejich rodiči, jsou rozdělovány na dívčí a chlapecké a jaký postoj vůči genderovým stereotypům zastávají rodiče. Ty označili sebe jako osoby, jenž vybírají hračky pro své děti. Dále sourozenci, především ty opačného pohlaví mají vliv na výběr hraček, zejména těch, které neodpovídají jejich genderu. Práce současně zjišťuje současný trend hraček i to, které hračky, typické pro opačné pohlaví, děti preferují. Tím se staly jednoznačně stavebnice různého druhu. U dívek tomu dále byly kočárky s panenkou nebo kuchyňka a u chlapců auta či jiné dopravní prostředky. Tyto hračky byly nejčestněji uváděny, i pokud šlo o hračky typické pro opačné pohlaví.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis "toys as a part of the gender socialization" points out to the issue of gender preferences of toys of preschool children. The main aim of this thesis was to find out, if children choose the toys typical for their gender, such as dolls and prams (girls) or cars and guns (boys). These preferences are affected by many factors. One of these factors are the parents, who have the biggest impact on the child in its early age. The next factors are also the children of the same age, the nursery school, teachers and literature. This thesis is divided into the theoretical part and the empirical part with the results. The theoretical part describes the gender socialization, which is connected with the gender identity and the role of gender. Children also adopt the behaviour, which is connected with their gender, through the socialization. I focus onto the gender socialization especially via parents and the children of same age, who have the biggest impact on the children and the children try to identify with them as well. The thesis proceeds from the cognitive developmental theories and from the work of Sandra Bem, which explain the people´s behaviour through the society impact. In addition to the parents, who have the biggest impact onto the children, school is the next factor, which helps the children to socialize and integrate into the society. Last but not least is here described the definition of toys, which are, of course, very important for the children. The research took place in two nursery schools, its main aim was to find out, which toys are most preferred by the preschool age children and if they match to kid's gender. Through the participating observation and the additional opinion poll were also described the factors, which have the biggest influence on the choice of toys of nursery school children. These nursery schools were intentionally chosen from different cities for their subsequent comparison. During the research were identified some factors, which cause the different gender preferences. The first of them is the area of the nursery school itself, which is also separated by the gender, next are the age of the kids and then the toys themselves. The separated area of kindergarten influences the playing of girls and boys as well. Both described kindergartens are actually grounded in the traditional gender patterns. Based on the observations and the survey analysis, children choose toys according to their gender at the majority of cases. However, this does not mean, they would not play also with the toys typical for the opposite gender, as mention their parents. This fact is however different from gender to gender and this relates more to girls than boys. Next part of the thesis focuses on the relationship between parents and toys if parents submit toys to their children, if they divide them into girly and boyish and also which stand they take to these gender stereotypes. People, who choose the toys for their children are logically parents. Next in the list are siblings they also have a big impact on the choice of toys, especially when it deals with the opposite gender. The thesis probes the recent toy trends at the same time, together with the preferred toys, such as different kinds of kits, dolls, prams, playing kitchen, cars and other types of car toys, as stated the most often.
