African micro-regionalism: the new impulse for development and integration of Africa? Case study of East Africa

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce spatřuje naději na integraci a rozvoj Afriky v postupné integraci kontinentu. Rozvoj Afriky skrze regionální integraci podporují i hlavní aktéři afrického kontinentu a to AU a NEPAD. Obě uskupení byly založeny počátkem tisíciletí a sdílí stejný názor na budoucí rozvoj Afriky skrze regionalismus, spolupráci a partnerství.Tato zvolená cesta, jak dosáhnout africké integrace je založena na pozitivní zkušenosti z 90. let s rozvojovými koridory (DC) a prostorovými rozvojovými iniciativami (SDI) z jižní Afriky. Práce předpokládá, že pozitivní zkušenost s DC a SDI v jižní Africe (hlavně s Rozvojovým koridorem Maputo) byla transformována do strategických plánů AU a NEPAD a je úspěšně rozvíjena ve východní Africe. Práce potvrzuje, že multidimenzionální přístup k rozvoji a integraci od AU a NEPAD je prospěšný, ale čelí určitým výzvám. Koncepty DC a SDI jsou efektivními a vitálními modely integrace, ale ne na mikroregionální úrovni (jak se předpokládalo), ale spíše na jen na regionální.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on renewed interest in African regionalism and integration represented by the activities of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) and African Union (AU). Both entities, launched in the beginning of new millennium, share the similar view of future African development in the form of regionalism, cooperation and partnership. All described features of future African development are based on the positive 1990s experience with development corridors (DC) and spatial development initiatives (SDI) in southern Africa. Thesis assumes that the positive experience with DC and SDI in Southern Africa (mainly with the Maputo Development Corridor) was transformed to the AU and NEPAD strategic and action plans. This transformation is successfully developed Eastern Africa. Thesis concludes that though the positive contribution of new regionalism, through the multidimensional NEPAD approach, AU and NEPAD are facing big challenges. However the concept of DC and SDI plays a significant and helpful role in the East African integration but not on the microregional level (as was assumed) rather on the regional level.
