Abstract:

The doctoral thesis Lexical Hierarchies in the Scientific Terminology focuses on organised systems of lexical items in terminologies of science. It examines and explains the principles on which terminological classificatory hierarchies are formed, investigates the sense relations between their component parts and compares the formation of terms in analogous hierarchies in English, Czech and Latin. Although the structure of scientific terminological hierarchies in different languages is very similar as they reflect the same objective reality or concepts, the morphological and onomatological properties of different languages have a substantial influence on the consistency and transparency of lexical hierarchies. The thesis draws a comparison between the various ways of formation of terms particularly in English and Czech, between taxonomies and meronomies, superordinate and subordinate taxonomic levels, and hierarchies in natural and social sciences, represented by the biological taxonomies (especially in botany) and hierarchies in economics (esp. in finance and accounting), respectively.
