COVID-19 as an existential and educational crisis: A mixed methods study on online learning experiences of foreign students in Brno

Abstract:

Online vzdělávání je téma, které si v posledních dvou letech získalo velkou pozornost. Pro tuto diplomovou práci jsem provedla smíšený sociologický výzkum zaměřený na zkušenosti zahraničních studentů s online výukou během pandemie COVID-19. Použil jsem teorii interakčních rituálů Randala Collinse jako rámec pro posouzení důležitosti tělesné společné přítomnosti v úspěšných rituálech učení. Tato studie ukazuje, že online učení nedokázalo vytvořit úspěšné interakční rituály, a to nejen pro zahraniční studenty, i když tito zahraniční studenti se museli vypořádat s dalšími problémy, které vedly k obzvláště stresujícím zkušenostem. Studie se snaží přispět k rostoucímu množství znalostí o sociálních dopadech pandemie a nabízí tak pomoc při plánování inkluzivních a podpůrných mechanismů pro duševní zdraví a vysokoškolské vzdělávání v budoucnosti.

Abstract:

Online learning is a topic that has gained much attention in the past two years. For this thesis, I conducted mixed-method sociological research focusing on the experiences of foreign students with online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. I employed Randal Collins’ interactional ritual theory as a framework to assess the importance of bodily co-presence in successful learning rituals. This study shows that online learning failed to create successful interactional rituals, not only for foreign students, although the latter had additional challenges to cope with, resulting in particularly stressful experiences. The study seeks to contribute to the growing body of knowledge of the social repercussions of the pandemic and thus offers help in planning for inclusive and supportive mechanisms for mental health and higher education in the future.
