Understanding Cultural Assimilation through the English-Speaking International Film Midsommar

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis explores the themes of cultism, indoctrination, white supremacy, and the manipulative power of empathy in the context of the film Midsommar. The film follows the story of Dani, a grieving young woman who travels to Sweden with her boyfriend and his friends to participate in a traditional midsummer festival. As the festival unfolds, it becomes clear that the community they are visiting is actually a white supremacist cult that is seeking to indoctrinate Dani into their belief system and sacrifice the other outsiders. The thesis focuses on the abovementioned themes and analyses their significance in the movie's plot. The thesis further investigates the psychological mechanisms that allow individuals to be susceptible to indoctrinative tactics and highlights the dangers of empathy as a manipulative tool of such extremist groups.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá tématy kultismu, indoktrinace, bílé nadřazenosti a manipulativní síly empatie v kontextu filmu Midsommar. Film je příběh Dani, truchlící mladé ženy, která vycestuje do Švédska se svým přítelem a jeho přáteli, aby se zúčastnila tradičního festivalu letního slunovratu. Jak se festival vyvíjí, začíná být zřejmé zřejmé, že komunita, kterou navštěvují, je ve skutečnosti kult vyznávající nadřazenost bílé rasy, který se snaží Dani indoktrinovat do jejich systému víry a ostatní cizince obětovat. Práce se zaměřuje na výše uvedená témata a analyzuje jejich význam v rámci děje filmu. Práce dále zkoumá psychologické mechanismy, které umožňují jednotlivcům podléhat indoktrinačním taktikám, a poukazuje na nebezpečí empatie jako manipulativního nástroje takových extremistických skupin.
