The relations among perceived interparental conflict and sickness absence of the child on the verge of adolescence

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá souvislostmi mezi vnímaným rodičovským konfliktem a mírou nemocnosti u jedenácti a dvanáctiletých dětí. Zpracované téma je nahlíženo z psychosomatické perspektivy. V teoretické části je nejprve vymezena percepce konfliktu mezi rodiči a jsou zmíněny její charakteristiky. Představeny jsou také základní teorie vlivu rodičovského konfliktu na dítě: kognitivně-kontextuální rámec a teorie emoční jistoty. Dále je vysvětlena souvislost mezi stresem a vznikem onemocnění. Nakonec jsou představeny principy systémového přístupu, psychosomatický rodinný model, role somatizace a triangulace. Ve výzkumu byla použita metoda CPIC (Škála dětské percepce rodičovského konfliktu) a vlastní dotazník zjišťující míru nemocnosti dětí, který byl vyplňován rodiči respondentů. V korelační studii byla nejvýznamnější souvislost zjištěna mezi jednotlivými ukazateli vlastností konfliktu (frekvence, intenzita a obsah), výskytem různých zdravotních obtíží a vyhledáváním lékařské pomoci. Statisticky významný vztah byl dále prokázán mezi vnímaným ohrožením z rodičovského konfliktu, výskytem různých zdravotních obtíží a vyhledáváním lékařské pomoci. Triangulace a nižší míra účinnosti zvládání také souvisela s výskytem různých zdravotních obtíží. Souvislosti mezi charakteristikami vnímaného konfliktu a školní absencí způsobenou zdravotními důvody nebyly prokázány. Také se ukázalo, že existence určitého onemocnění (konkrétně časté bolesti hlavy a „jiné onemocnění“) souvisí s negativním vnímáním konfliktu mezi rodiči. Výsledky studie jsou porovnávány s teoretickými koncepty a dřívějšími empirickými zjištěními. Na závěr jsou zmíněny limity výzkumu a je předložen návrh rozšíření tématu do budoucna.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the relations between perceived interparental conflict and sickness absence of a child at the age of 11 and 12. The subject is seen from the psychosomatic perspective. In the theoretical part, perceived interparental conflict is explained first and characteristics of the conflict are mentioned. Subsequently, main theories dealing with the impact of marital discord on child are presented: cognitive-contextual framework and emotional security theory. Relations between stress and illness are also explained. At the end, system approach, the psychosomatic family model, somatization and triangulation are presented. In the empirical study perceived interparental conflict was measured by CPIC - Children‘s Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale, meanwhile the sickness absence was measured by the personally-designed questionnaire given to the parents of children. In the correlation study the relations among Conflict Properties (frequency, intensity and resolution), occurence of various health issues and searching for the medical help were the strongest one. The significant associations were prooved amog perceived threat of interparental conflict, occurence of various health issues and searching for the medical help. Triangulation and children’s ability to cope with interparental conflict were also associated with occurence of various health issues. The links between some dimensions of the perceived conflict and the school absence caused by health problems were not found out. It was discovered that there is the relation between some type of illness (frequent headache and „the others“) and negative perceived marital conflict. The results of this study are compared with presented theories and empirical findings. Furthermore, the limitations of the study are mentioned and new topic for the future research is suggested.
