The reception of the Gothic novel in Finnish literature

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce pojednává o vlivu tzv. "gotických románů" a jejich následovníků na finskou literaturu. V práci jsou analyzována díla navazující na tradici subžánru, jež vznikla na území Finska v době od 19. století po současnost, proto zde kromě děl finskojazyčných pracuji i s díly švédskojazyčnými. Zabývám se okolnostmi, které mohly vést k tomu, že se "gotickému románu" a jeho nástupcům - hororu a "paranormální romanci" - podařilo v určitých obdobích ve Finsku prosadit. Práce dále pojednává o některých specifických rysech typických pro díla navazující na odkaz "gotického románu" ve Finsku. Zároveň nastiňuje, jak se od sebe odlišují mužská a ženská linie jak původních anglických "gotických románů", tak i děl finských navazujících na jejich odkaz.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the influence of so-called "gothic novels" and their successors on Finnish literature. In this study I analyze works continuing in this tradition which were written in the territory of Finland during the time from the 19th century to the present time and in that way I am dealing with works written not only in Finnish but also in Swedish. Furthermore, I am dealing with the socio-historical circumstances which could have led to opportunities for the wider exposure of the "gothic novel" and its successors - horror and paranormal romance. I concentrate on some specific features which are typical for works continuing in the tradition of the "gothic novel" in Finland. I am also trying to outline the difference between the male and female way of writting of the original English "gothic novel" and the following Finnish counterparts.
