Viruses and their role in the evolution of organisms

Abstract:

Viry jsou genetičtí parazité buněčných organismů napříč všemi doménami života na Zemi a svou početností dominují její biosféře. Všeobecně jsou považovány za nebuněčné organismy – hranici mezi živým a neživým, přičemž objev gigantických virů tuto hranici ještě víc stírá. Mnohé studie potvrzují jejich zásadní úlohu v evoluci organismů, na druhé straně jejich původ je však stále neznámý. Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá hypotézami o vzniku virů a zahrnuje též dosavadní poznatky a hypotézy týkající se vlivu virů na evoluci organismů. Práce se též věnuje jednoduchým replikonům jako jsou ribozymy či viroidy a samotnému vzniku RNA a DNA jako informačních molekul tvořících základ života na Zemi.

Abstract:

Viruses are genetic parasites of cellular organisms across all the domains of life on Earth and when it comes to their abundance, they dominate the biosphere. In general, they are considered as acellular organisms – a border between the living and non-living, while the discovery of giant viruses blurs this border even more. Numerous studies confirm their crucial role in the evolution of organisms, although their origin is still unknown. This bachelor thesis deals with the hypotheses of the origin of viruses and comprises also the current knowledge and hypotheses considering the impact of viruses on the evolution of organisms. The thesis considers also simple replicons such as ribozymes and viroids and the emergence of RNA and DNA as informational molecules forming the basis of the life on Earth.
