The relationship between perceived teachers' approach and coping strategies, self-regulated learning and academic performance in secondary school students

Abstract:

Tato práce je zaměřena na vztah vnímané podpory základních psychologických potřeb podle sebedeterminační teorie, seberegulovaným učením a copingovými strategií a akademickým výkonem u studentů středních škol. Hlavním cíle této práce bylo zjistit, zda ovlivňuje podpora kompetence, autonomie a pocitu sounáležitosti sebe-regulované učení a zda je nezávislým prediktorem. Dále naším cílem bylo zjistit, zda a jakým způsobem podpora psychologických potřeb se vztahuje ke copingovým strategiím v akademickém kontextu a akademickému výkonu středoškolských studentů. Sběr dat proběhl ve formě dotazníku složený z Learning Climate Questionnaire (Deci et al., 1994), Coping Strategies Inventory – Short Form (Tobin, Holryod & Reynolds, 1984) a Revised Motivated Learning Questionnaire (Wang, 2012; Pintrich, Smith, García, & McKeachie, 1991). Výzkumný soubor činilo 94 participantů z maturitních tříd středních škol. Data byla zpracována ve statistickém programu SPSS, korelační a regresní analýzou. Výsledky naznačily, že vnímaná podpora základních psychologických potřeb ze strany učitelů, obzvláště podpora autonomie, má vliv na míru sebe-regulace. Výsledky také naznačily, že podpora ze strany učitele zvyšuje pravděpodobnost využití adaptivnějších copingových strategií ve školním prostředí. Výsledky nepodpořily hypotézu, že vnímaná podpora ze strany učitele koreluje s akademickým výkone a kladně jej ovlivňuje. Výzkum také naznačuje, že podpora autonomie je nezávislým prediktorem míry sebe-regulovaného učení na příklonových copingových strategií zaměřených na problém. Výsledky mohou nalézt uplatnění v praxi pedagogů, kteří skrze podporu potřeb svých studentů zvyšují pravděpodobnost rozvoje sebe-regulovaného učení a využití adaptivního coping ve akademickém prostředí

Abstract:

This study explores the relation between the teachers´ support of the basic psychological need according to SDT, self-regulated learning, coping strategies and academic performance in secondary school students. This study aimed to investigate whether perceived teachers' support of competence, autonomy, and relatedness influences student's self-regulated learning and whether is autonomy support an independent predictor of self-regulated learning. Furthermore, we wanted to investigate whether the teachers' support is connected to coping in academic domain and the academic achievement of secondary students. And if so in what manner. The research was carried out in the form of an anonymous paper-based questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of Learning Climate Questionnaire (Deci et al., 1994), Coping Strategies Inventory – Short Form (Tobin, Holryod & Reynolds, 1984) and Revised Motivated Learning Questionnaire (Wang, 2012; Pintrich, Smith, García, & McKeachie, 1991). A total number of participants comprised of 94 secondary school students in their last year of school. The obtained data were processed using correlation and regression analysis in statistical software SPSS. Our results suggest that perceived teachers` support, especially autonomy support, has a significant influence on self-regulated learning. Moreover, our results suggest that employment of more adaptive coping in the academic domain is connected to the perceived support of psychological needs. The hypothesis of a relationship between the perceived support and academic achievement was not supported. The study revealed that perceived autonomy support is an independent predictor of self/regulated learning. The outcomes of this study can be useful in pedagogical practice for creating an environment that satisfies students psychological needs and enables them to further develop their self-regulated learning abilities and engage in adaptive coping ways.
