The Ritual Identification of Human with Deity in the Religion of Aztecs

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the topic of the identification of a human with deities in the religion of Aztecs where I am trying to grasp the topic through the method of Clifford Geertz about religion as a system of symbols. The aim of the thesis is to answer three questions concerning the identification and these are in particular: (1.) how the individual is chosen for the role of the deity, (2.) how this identification is represented and (3.) how the identification itself is possible. The hypothesis used is that the transformation of the individual into the deity is a process of symbolization when the human is gradually changing into a complex symbol. According to the length of the thesis only three examples were selected which try to illustrate the most distinct cases of identification of a human with the deity. As the first one I chose the identification of young man with the Tezcatlipoca god during an important Aztec celebration of Toxcatl, the second one was the identification of warriors of the orders of Eagle and Jaguar with the deities or opposite deity principles which are represented by the warriors during a military ritual; and third the topic of ritual theophagy when ritual consuming of a human identified with the deity took place. These three cases are gradually described with more detail and observed; and the theory of Clifford Geertz is applied to the chosen ones. I work mainly with his definition of the symbol, the system of symbols, ritual as a place where moods and motivations are strengthened, methods of representation as “saying“ content meanings of symbols. In separate chapters I am trying to apply on the chosen problems his interpretation of models of and models for.

Abstract:

Práca sa venuje téme stotožnenia človeka s božstvom v náboženstve Aztékov, pričom sa túto tému snaží uchopiť pomocou metódy Clifforda Geertza o náboženstve ako systéme symbolov. Cieľom práce je zodpovedanie troch otázok týkajúcich sa stotožnenia a to konkrétne: (1.) ako je jedinec pre rolu božstva vyberaný, (2.) ako je toto stotožnenie reprezentované a (3.) ako je možná jeho prípustnosť. Hypotézou je pojatie premeny jedinca v božstvo ako proces symbolizácie, kedy sa z neho samého postupnou premenou stáva komplexný symbol. V závislosti k rozsahu práce boli vybrané tri sondy, ktoré sa snažia postihnúť čo najrôznejšie prípady identifikácie človeka s božstvom. Ako prvá téma bolo zvolené stotožnenie mladého muža s božstvom Tezcatlipoca na významnej aztéckej slávnosti Toxcatl, druhou témou bolo stotožnenie bojovníkov z rádov Orla a Jaguára s božstvami, či opozitnými božskými princípmi, ktoré predstavujú bojovníci počas vojenského rituálu, a napokon treťou témou rituálna teofágia, kedy dochádzalo k rituálnemu pojedaniu človeka stotožneného s božstvom. Tieto tri prípady sú postupne podrobnejšie popísané a preskúmané a na vybrané problémy je aplikovaná teória Clifforda Geertza. Pracujem tu predovšetkým s jeho pojatím a definíciou symbolu, symbolických súborov, rituálu ako miesta, kde sú upevňované nálady a motivácie, spôsobu reprezentácie ako ,,hovorenia“ obsahových významov symbolov. V samostatných kapitolách sa pokúšam aplikovať na vybrané problémy jeho interpretačnú mriežku modelov niečoho a modelov pre niečo.
