Moissac: a Sacred Space at the Borders of Social Groups

Abstract:

Předmětem magisterské práce je klášter v Svatého Petra v Moissacu, ležící v jihozápadní Francii. Práce se soustředí především na období konce 11. a prvních desetiletí 12. století, kdy probíhala velkolepá "románská" přestavba kláštera, z níž se do dnešních dnů dochoval rozsáhlý ambit se sochanými sloupovými hlavicemi a věžový portikus se zvonicí a bohatou sochařskou výzdobou portálu. Vzhledem k rozsáhlé odborné bibliografii, která je Moissacu dosud věnována, začíná tato práce kritickou historiografickou analýzou dosavadního stavu bádání a je pokusem o novou interpretaci této památky, její architektury a sochařské výzdoby. Tato interpretace je založena především na vztahu mezi architekturou, výzdobou a jejich používáním různými sociálními skupinami, které se v klášteře setkávaly a následně je zasazena do širšího rámce vizuální strategie kláštera, která je v úzkém dialogu s pozdně antickou minulostí regionu.

Abstract:

The subject of this thesis is the abbey of St. Peter in Moissac, located in southwestern France. The thesis focuses mainly on the period between the late 11th and the first decades of the 12th century when a magnificent “Romanesque” rebuilding of the site took place, from which a large cloister with sculpted column capitals and a monumental tower-porch with a bell tower and a richly sculpted portal survive until today. Given the extensive scholarly bibliography devoted to Moissac to date, the work begins with a critical historiographical analysis of the current state of research, and then attempts to reinterpret this monument, its architecture and sculptural decoration. This interpretation is based primarily on the relationship between architecture and decoration, and their use by the different social groups that interacted in the monastery. Subsequently, it is set within a broader framework of the visual strategy of the abbey that is in close dialogue with the late antique past of the region.
