Cryptoassets in the banks' assets

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na problematiku krypto-aktiv a přístup ke krypto-aktivům ze strany bank. Na úvod je popsána podstata krypto-aktiv, základní charakteristiky, druhy a technologie, která umožnuje jejich existenci. Na přikladu nejpopulárnějšího krypto-aktiva Bitcoinu je znázorněn historicky vývoj těchto aktiv. V další části je představen rozbor regulatorního rámce tykajícího se krypto-aktiv. Pozornost je věnovaná největším světovým finančním trhům: evropskému, americkému a asijskému trhu reprezentovanému Čínou a Japonskem, popisu jejich společných rysů a odlišností. Každý finanční trh je rozebrán z hlediska vývoje regulatorního rámce, přístupu ke zdanění a současných podmínek regulace. Třetí bod je věnován analýze rizik pro banky, spojených s držením krypto-aktiv. Analýza rizik se dotkne všech základních rizik, kterým jsou banky v současné době vystaveny: uvěrového, tržního, operačního, rizika likvidity, a dalších rizik, která je specifická pro držitele krypto-aktiv. V následující části je zmapován současný přístup bank ke krypto-aktivům z pohledu účetnictví a sestavování finančních výkazů podle standardů IFRS. Byly diskutovány několik základních kategorií aktiv, do kterých krypto-aktiva v souladu s těmito standardy mohou být zaraženy. Na závěr jsou tyto úvahy podpořeny příkladem z praxe.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis focuses on the issue of crypto-assets and approach of banks to crypt-assets. At first, the essence of crypt-assets, their basic characteristics, types and technology that enable their existence are described. For the description of the historical development of these assets, the example of Bitcoin – the most widespread crypto-asset – is used. The following part presents an analysis of regulatory framework. Attention is paid to the world’s largest financial markets: the European, American and Asian markets represented by China and Japan, to the description of their common features and differences. Each financial market is discussed in terms of the development of the regulatory framework, the approach to taxation and the current regulatory conditions. The third part is devoted to analysis of risks for banks associated with the holding crypto-assets. The risk analysis addresses all of the main risks that banks are exposed to: credit, market, operational, liquidity risk, and other risks specific to crypto-asset holders. The following section outlines the current approach of banks to crypto-assets in terms of accounting and financial reporting under IFRS. Several asset categories in which crypto-assets according to these standards could be included were discussed. . In conclusion, these considerations are supported by an example from practice
