Artist's book inspired by travel to Tanzania

Abstract:

Těžištěm diplomové práce je praktický umělecký výkon, jenž doprovází teoretická a didaktická část. Základem praktického projektu je návrh autorské knihy s názvem Na hranici, která tematizuje autorčinu cestu do Tanzanie a její cílovou skupinou jsou dospívající. Příběhy této knihy jsou zprostředkovány jak skrze klasické vyprávění, tak i formou příspěvků na sociálních sítích. Také ilustrace následují tento protiklad, a jsou tedy tvořeny kombinací tradičních i nových grafických technik. Konkrétně je použito kombinace linorytu a počítačové grafiky k vytvoření ilustrací k autorským příběhům. Nutným příslušenstvím k tvorbě tohoto projektu bylo linoleum, papíry vyšší gramáže, tiskařské barvy a aplikace společnosti Adobe InDesign, Photoshop a Illustrator. Cílem je vytvořit obsahově i vizuálně hodnotný výtvarný předmět. Doprovodný text stručně popisuje africkou estetiku, která je podstatná pro finální podobu ilustrací, oblast východní Afriky a také vzájemný vliv afrického a evropského umění či kultury. V didaktické části je představen návrh výtvarně vzdělávacího projektu inspirovaného autorskou knihou a motivem cesty. Po dokončení tohoto úkolu shledáváme, že je výsledný produkt vizuálně uspokojivý a způsobem, jakým doprovází příběh, může působit pozitivně na emoce a postoje mladých čtenářů. Předpokládáme, že se podařilo vytvořit nový způsob komunikace s mladými lidmi v oblasti užitého umění.

Abstract:

The thesis consists of three parts, when the core is a practical piece of work accompanied by a theoretical part involving teaching methodology. The main idea of this project is to design a personal story book named Na hranici (“On the border”) for the young describing the author´s travel to Tanzania. The storyline of the book is conveyed through classic narration as well as social media posts. Created illustrations follow this contradiction. Therefore, both traditional and new techniques are utilized. To be more specific, we combined linocut graphics with computer graphics in order to create illustrations for the story. The materials used for the project are: linoleum, heavyweight paper, printing inks and Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign Adobe applications. African aesthetics is considered to be a fundamental factor for the final form of the illustrations. This is why African aesthetics, contrast of the current African society and other key aspects (e.g., interaction of African and European culture and art) are described in the theoretical part of the thesis. The concept of teaching methodology based on artist´s book side by side with the motif of journey is also covered in the thesis. Our overall approach is to create a functionally and visually valuable piece of art. Upon the completion of the assignment, the final product might be found visually pleasing because of the way it accompanies the storyline and in addition, it might affect the young along with their emotions and attitudes. As an anticipated outcome, a new form of communication with the young in the field of applied Arts has been created.
