Participation of Catholic believers in political life in Czech Republic

Abstract:

Tato práce sleduje vztah mezi religiozitou a participací na politickém životě v České republice. V první části nás seznamuje s demokracií jako politickým systémem a se způsoby participace na politickém životě v demokratické společnosti. Dále se zabývá vývojem religiozity v moderní společnosti a v České republice, procesem sekularizace a desekularizace a privatizace a deprivatizace náboženství a pohledy na roli náboženství v současné společnosti. Všímá si rovněž reakcí katolické církve na jmenované trendy v moderní společnosti a její snahy zapojit věřící ve větší míře do politické činnosti a zvýšit jejich odpovědnost za vývoj společnosti. Druhou částí práce je analýza dat z první (2002) a poslední (2010/2011) vlny Evropského sociálního výzkumu. V těchto obdobích sledujeme rozdíly mezi zájmem katolických věřících a nevěřících o politický život a rozdíly mezi způsoby participace na politickém životě. Práce si rovněž všímá vývoje zájmu o politický život stupně a způsobů politické participace v čase mezi sledovanými skupinami. Provedené analýzy však nepotvrdily hypotézy, které předpokládaly větší participaci katolických věřících na politickém životě společnosti v porovnání s nevěřícími respondenty. V závěru práce jsou pak nastíněny možné příčiny této skutečnosti.

Abstract:

This work observes the relation between religiosity and participation in a political life in the Czech Republic. In the First part we get to know democracy as a political system and the ways of participation in a political life in a democratic society. In addition it deals with the development of religiosity in a modern society and in the Czech Republic, the process of secularization and desecularization and privatization and deprivatization of religion and the views of the role of religion in the society nowadays. It also takes into consideration responses of the Catholic church to the trends mentioned above in a modern society and its efforts to involve believers more in political activities and to increase their personal responsibility for the development of a society. The second part of my work is data analysis from the First (2002) and the last (2012) wave of European Social Research. In the certain period of time we observe the differences between interests of Catholic believers and unbelievers in a political life and the differences of the participation in a political life. Furthermore the work is interested in the development of interests in a political life, degrees and ways of political participation in the certain period of time between these two groups. However the analysis, which were carried out, have not proved the hypothesis that participation of Catholic believers take a bigger part in a political life compared with those respondents who are unbelievers. The conclusion refers to the possible causes of this actuality.
