Science Centers: establishment, mission, changes - focused on Techmania Science Center

Abstract:

Předložená disertační práce nese název "Science centra: vznik, poslání, proměny zaměřené na science centrum Techmania". Již z pojmenování můžeme stručně identifikovat tři pojednávané klíčové oblasti. První část - teoretická - je rozdělena do pěti cílů a zabývá se především evropskými a americkými science centry, protože jsou pro kulturní genezi Techmanie nejpodstatnější. Byl definován termín "science centrum" a jeho etablování v českém jazyce. Prvním bodem teoretické části je vymezení se oproti institucím podobným, a to muzeím. V souvislosti s terminologií science center je pojednáno o tom, kdo je edutainer. Za druhé je popsána historie science center ve světě a také v České republice. V České republice je sledován vznik všech pěti science center iQparku, potažmo iQLANDIE, Techmania Science Centra, Vida! science centra, Světa techniky Ostrava a Pevnosti poznání. Také je zmíněna Technická herna náležící pod Technické muzeum v Brně, která nese v České republice prvenství. Připomenuty jsou rovněž české projekty na vybudování science center, které se nerealizovaly. Za třetí je v práci uvedeno pojednání o poslání science center. Jsou představena nejen významná světová science centra, ale i tuzemská. Disertační práce se také zabývá tím, jak science centra definují své vize, poslání a cíle. Čtvrtou položkou jsou hlavní proměny science center v zahraničí. I když historie proměn v České republice není tak dlouhá, přesto se práce zabývá proměnami Techmanie. Poslední důležitým bodem je analýza různých návštěvnických skupin. V druhé části - praktické - je zjišťován vztah respondentů k science centrům, konkrétně k Techmania Science Center. Byla použita metoda kvantitativního výzkumu pomocí dotazníkového šetření. Jelikož každá skupina měla jiné spektrum respondentů, byly vypracovány tři studie. Tento výzkum byl explorativního charakteru a nebyl dosud v České republice proveden. U každé studie byly detailně představeny použité vědecké metody zkoumání, cílová skupina, cíle studie, pracovní hypotézy, analýza dat, problémy a stručné shrnutí. Ve Studii I byly cílovou skupinou respondenti složení z těch, kteří nikdy nenavštívili žádné science centrum, a z návštěvníků Techmania Science Center. Studie II měla za cílovou skupinu pedagogy základních a středních škol v České republice, kteří navštívili Techmania Science Center. Poslední studie, Studie III, měla za cílovou skupinu ředitele základních a středních škol v České republice.

Abstract:

The title of this dissertation is "Science Centers: establishment, mission, changes - focused on Techmania Science Center". As the title itself suggests there are three main areas the paper deals with. The first part of the dissertation is theoretical and it is divided into five sections. This dissertation deals mainly with European and American science centers, because they are most important for the cultural genesis of the Techmania Science center. In this section the modern incarnation of the "science center" is defined, and the term's establishment as a Czech loanword from English is explained. The first point of this thesis is to distinguish between science centers and similar institutions, notably museums. In connection with the terminology of science centers it is explained what an edutainer is. Second, the history of science centers in the world and in the Czech Republic is described. The thesis outlines the establishment of all five science centers in the Czech Republic - iQpark and, by extension, iQLANDIA, Techmania Science Center, Vida! Science Center (Vida! science centrum), Technology Center Ostrava (Svět techniky Ostrava) and Fortress of Knowledge (Pevnost poznání). A note has been made about Technical playroom (Technická herna) which is a part of Technical museum in Brno (Technické muzeum Brno), which holds the first place within the Czech Republic as a place were interactive exhibits were displayed. Also, Czech projects for establishing science centers which were not realized are mentioned.Third, the thesis contains a treatise on the mission of science centers. Various important science centers from around the world and domestic ones were discussed. The main point of observation was to present their own definitions of their visions, missions and goals. The fourth point which this dissertation deals with, are the main changes of science centers abroad, and even though the history of changes in the Czech Republic is not very long, the changes in Techmania Science center were still addressed. The last important point was an analysis of various groups of visitors. After the theoretical part, the practical part investigates the attitude towards science centers, more specifically to Techmania Science Center. The necessary data have been collected by using a method of quantitative research, in the form of questionnaires. As each group consisted of a different demographic of respondents, three Studies were made. This type of research has not been executed in the Czech Republic before. The used scientific methods of investigation, the target group, the goals of the Study, the working hypothesis, the analysis of data, the problems and the concise summary were described in detail for every single Study. In Study I the target group were the respondents who have never visited any science center and the visitors of Techmania Science Center. The target group for Study II were the teachers of elementary and secondary schools in the Czech Republic, who have visited Techmania Science center. Study III focused on headmasters and headmistresses of elementary and secondary schools in the Czech Republic.
