Searching for a Moral Standpoint of Oscar Wilde through his Letters and Works

Abstract:

Cílem Bakalářské práce "Úpad Morálky v Obraze Doriana Graye a Vliv na Oscara Wilde" je ohlednout se zpět na jeho život a nejdůležitější osoby, které na něj měly vliv. Jedním z cílu je analyzovat jeho dopisy a díla a najít v nich stopy po morálce a jejím následném úpadku v příběhu The Picture of Dorian Gray. Jeho morálka byla během jeho života ve Viktoriánském období často souzena a zpochybňována. Hlavní Důraz je kladen na dílo, které je považováno za nejkontroverznější a také nejdůležitější: The Picture of Dorian Gray, a také na to, jak styl Oscara Wilde, jakožto člena Estetického hnutí, ovlivnil jeho dílo a jak kritici Viktoriánského období toto neobvyklé dílo přijali. Dále tato práce rozebere Viktoriánskou společnost a z jakého důvodu byli členové této společnosti často považování za pokrytce. Středem pozornosti budou hlavně témata, která byla považována za tabu a nikdo se o nich neopovažoval mluvit.

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis "The Moral Decay in the Picture of Dorian Gray and the Influence on Oscar Wilde" aims to look at life and the most important influences on Oscar Wilde. One of the aims is to analyze his letters and works to look for signs of the moral and the following decay of it in the story of The Picture of Dorian Gray, which is something that was often questioned and judged during his life in the Victorian era. Mainly it focuses on the work that was considered to be the most controversial, but also the most important: The Picture of Dorian Gray and how Oscar Wilde's style as a member of the Aesthetic movement influenced this work and how the critics of the Victorian era accepted this unusual novel. Furthermore, this work will analyze the Victorian society and what led to the the reasons they were often called hypocritical, with the focus on the topics that were considered taboo and no one dared to talk about them.
