On Morality of Terrorism

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá stále nedostatečně prozkoumanou otázkou morality terorismu. Má dva cíle: Zaprvé, najít pracovní definici terorismu, která by byla politicky a morálně neutrální, a tedy vhodná pro morální bádání ve věci ospravedlnitelnosti terorismu. Zadruhé, představit a kriticky zhodnotit některá možná morální ospravedlnění činů definovaných jako terorismus. Autor této práce na základě prozkoumání již existujících definicí dospěl k závěru, že nastíněným záměrům nejlépe odpovídá definice předložená Timothym Shanahanem. Co se týče druhého cíle, v zájmu soudržnosti práce byli zvoleni dva autoři s podobnými východisky, ale přesto odlišným uvažováním. Oba autoři, Virginia Held a J. Angelo Corlett, doplňují konsekvencionalistickou pozici deontologickými argumenty vycházejícími z distributivní a retributivní spravedlnosti. I když myšlenky obou autorů byly kvůli některým problémům v jejich uvažování shledány jako nepřesvědčivé, v závěru práce je zdůrazněno několik bodů užitečných pro další uvažování o této problematice.

Abstract:

This thesis is concerned with a still insufficiently explored question of the morality of terrorism. It has two aims: First, to find a working definition of terrorism, which would be politically and morally neutral and so fit for a moral inquiry into the matter of justifiability of terrorism. Second, to present and critically evaluate some possible moral justifications of acts defined as terrorism. Exploration of the field of existing definitions led the author of the thesis to the conclusion that the most suitable definition for the delineated purposes has been provided by Timothy Shanahan. As regards the second goal, for the sake of coherence of the thesis, two authors with similar standpoints yet different reasoning have been chosen. Both authors, Virginia Held and J. Angelo Corlett, complement the consequentialist position with deontological arguments based on concepts of distributive and retributive justice, respectively. Even though the thoughts of both authors have been found unconvincing due to what seems to be flaws in their reasoning, a few takeaways for further thinking have been highlighted towards the conclusion of the thesis.
