MALDI-TOF zobrazovací hmotnostní spektrometrie (MSI) se začala rozvíjet na přelomu druhého a třetího tisíciletí a již od prvních aplikací poskytovala důležité informace o prostorovém výskytu různých biomolekul, nejčastěji peptidů, proteinů, lipidů a oligosacharidů, v řezech živočišných tkání, rostlinných pletiv a podobně.
