Me, the Artist, Me, the Transhumanist. Mapping and categorization of artistic activities in the context of contemporary transhumanist discussion

Abstract:

Baklářská práce je zaměřena na zmapování a kategorizování transhumanistických rysů v současném umění. Poskytne stručnou historii formování transhumanistického hnutí s jejími klíčovými představiteli, charakteristiku transhumanismu a uvedení do transhumanistické terminologie. Dále bude stručně uveden současný stav bádání na poli transhumanistického hnutí, který bude reflektován ze dvou hledisek: z hlediska kritity technooptimismu a z hlediska bioetiky. Budou uvedeni klíčoví umělci a díla reagující na transhumanistické myšlenky, či pracující s principy, na kterých je transhumanistické hnutí založeno. Budou představeny klíčové platformy, skupiny, hnutí, směry, manifesty vztahující se k transhumanismu. Hlavním cílem práce je poskytnout relevantní výčet transhumanistických umělců a kategorizovat platfory a způsoby, jakými se v jejich tvorbě principy a myšlenky transhumanismu projevují.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to map and categorize transhumanistic features in contemporary art. In the Introduction part, I discuss a brief history of the transhumanist movement, phases of formation with its key representatives, the characteristics of transhumanism and the introduction into transhumanistic terminology. Furthermore, the current state of research in the field of transhumanist movement will be briefly presented and reflected by two fundamental perspectives – technooptimism criticism and bioethics. The thesis is introducing those artists and their works, which are responding directly to transhumanist ideas and working both with practical and theoretical principles of the transhumanist movement. Important platforms, groups, movements, directions, manifestos related to transhumanism will be presented. The main aim of this thesis is to provide a relevant overview of transhumanistic artists and their artistctic practice, categorizations, platforms and ways in which the principles and ideas of transhumanism manifest.
