Influence of the evaluator on the assessment of body condition in dogs

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou vlivu hodnotitele (chovatel, student, veterinární lékař) na hodnocení tělesné kondice u psů, kteří ve sledovaném období navštívili ordinaci soukromého veterinárního lékaře. Do studie bylo zapojeno 92 psů a jejich chovatelů. V rámci hodnocení byly brány v potaz lidské i zvířecí faktory, které mohly ovlivňovat úsudek hodnotitele. K hodnocení byly použity stupnice Body Condition Score (BCS) v rozmezí 1-5 bodů a 1-9 bodů. Data byla analyzována pomocí Shapiro-Wilkova testu, Spearmanova korelačního koeficientu, Mann-Whitneyova U testu pro nepárové výběry a metodou chí-kvadrát testu. Statistickým hodnocením dat bylo prokázáno, že žádný z testovaných lidských faktorů (pohlaví, věk, chovatelské zkušenosti, míra vykonávané fyzické aktivity) neměl vliv na hodnocení výživového stavu psů. Při analýze zvířecích faktorů byl zjištěn vliv pouze u délky srsti, kdy krátkosrstí psi byli dle pětibodové stupnice statisticky vysoce významně častěji správně ohodnoceni (p<0,01) a statisticky významně častěji byli nadhodnoceni psi s dlouhou srstí (p<0,05). Na podhodnocení kondice neměla délka srsti statisticky významný vliv (p>0,05). Vliv délky srsti nebyl prokázán u devítibodové stupnice (p>0,05). Žádný ze zbylých testovaných faktorů (plemeno, provozování psího sportu, pohlaví, věk, zdravotní stav) se neprokázal jako faktor ovlivňující hodnocení tělesné kondice psů. Práce poukazuje na několik lidských i zvířecích faktorů, které mohou ovlivňovat úsudek hodnotitele při posuzování tělesné kondice psů. Zdůrazňuje rovněž důležitost prevence, edukace veřejnosti a komunikace mezi veterinárními lékaři a chovateli. Výsledky práce ukázaly, že hodnocení tělesné kondice u psů bylo ve většině případech přesnější při použití devítibodové stupnice. Je proto možné tvrdit, že je tato stupnice vhodnější pro použití v praxi.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the analysis of the influence of the evaluator (breeder, student, veterinarian) on the evaluation of the body condition of dogs that visited a private veterinarian's office during the study period. The study involved 92 dogs and their owners. Both human and animal factors that may have influenced the evaluator's judgment were considered. Body Condition Score (BCS) scales ranging from 1-5 points and 1-9 points were used for evaluation. Data were analysed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, Spearman's correlation coefficient, Mann-Whitney U test for unpaired samples, and the chi-square test. In the analysis of animal factors, an effect was found only for coat length, where short-haired dogs were statistically highly significantly more often correctly assessed according to the five-point scale (p<0,01), while long-haired dogs were statistically significantly more often overrated (p<0,05). Hair length had no statistically significant effect on the underestimation of fitness (p>0,05). The effect of hair length was not demonstrated for the nine-point scale (p>0,05). None of the other factors tested (breed, dog sport, gender, age, health status) proved to be a factor influencing the evaluation of dogs' body condition. This thesis highlights several human and animal factors that may influence an evaluator's judgement in assessing the body condition of dogs. It also emphasizes the importance of prevention, public education and communication between veterinarians and owners. The results of the study showed that the assessment of body condition in dogs was more accurate in most cases when using a nine-point scale. It can therefore be argued that this scale is more appropriate for use in practice.
