V minulosti představovalo námořní pirátství velkou hrozbu pro námořní přepravu - pro téměř klíčovou součást většiny ekonomik států. Během 20. století byla tato hrozba minimalizována a upozaděna nejdříve světovými válkami a následně Studenou válkou. Abstract:
In the past the naval piracy constituted a great threat for shipment – for the almost vital part of the most of the state economies. During 20th century this threat was minimalized and suppressed by the World Wars and the Cold War.
