The geopolitics Iran's Islamic Republic: analysis regional politics of local power

Abstract:

V práci zkoumám zahraničně-politické aktivity Íránské islámské republiky, a to na základě její geografie, mocenských kapacit a mocenském postavení. Výzkumné období jsem stanovil od islámské revoluce v roce 1979 do dubna 2018. V teoretické části vymezuji koncepty moci a regionální mocnosti (regional power). Dále již hodnotím íránské mocenské postavení. Ekonomika Íránu není příliš vyspělá a je závislá na vývozu ropy. Armádu má početnou, ale oproti arabským státům Perského zálivu má zastaralou techniku. Írán vede vlastní jaderný program a kvůli němu byl dlouhou dobu terčem mezinárodních sankcí. Má 82 milionů obyvatel a jeho území je tvořeno převážně horami. Írán je mocným hráčem na Blízkém východě a vyznačuje se vnitřní stabilitou. Po odstranění Saddáma Husajna Američany v roce 2003 se Íránu otevřela nová cesta pro rozšiřování svého vlivu. Íránská regionální politika se mj. vyznačuje podporou šíitů a šíitských ozbrojených skupin v regionu. Saúdská Arábie je jeho hlavní rival v regionu. Agresivním chováním vůči Izraeli se Írán snaží především zlepšit image u arabské veřejnosti. Sýrie je jeho dlouhodobý spojenec, a proto nyní syrský režim podporuje v občanské válce. Írán má velké ambice a chce dominovat Blízkému východu.

Abstract:

In the work I explore the foreign-political activities of the Islamic Republic of Iran, namely based on its geography, power capacities and power status. I set the research period from the Islamic Revolution in 1979 to April 2018. In the theoretical part, I define the concepts of power and regional power. I also evaluate the Iranian power position. The economy of Iran is not very developed and it is dependent on oil exports. It owns a large army, but compared to the Arabian Gulf states, it has obsolete technology. Iran is running its own nuclear program and for a long time it was the target of international sanctions on the grounds of this. It has 82 million inhabitants and its territory consists mainly of mountains. Iran is a powerful player in the Middle East and it is characterized by internal stability. After Saddam Hussein's removal by the Americans in 2003, a new way has opened for Iran to expand its influence. Iran's regional policy, among other things, is characterized by the support of Shiites and Shiite armed groups in the region. Saudi Arabia is its main rival in the region. With aggressive behaviour towards Israel, Iran is primarily seeking to improve the image with the Arab public. Syria is its long-standing ally, and therefore it supports the Syrian regime in the civil war now. Iran has great ambitions and wants to dominate the Middle East.
