Media depiction of Czechs in slovak press Národnie noviny and Slovák during the years 1919 – 1938/1939

Abstract:

Diploma thesis deals with media representation of Czechs in Slovak periodicals belonging to two currents: Národnie noviny, representing evangelical current, and Slovák, representing the catholic portion of society. Analyzed time periods are the key years for both of the nations, 1919 and 1938-1939. Using the method of discourse analysis of J. P. Gee, thesis portrays strategies of creating representation of Czechs and alteration thereof since the beginning of the First republic to the time period during Second republic to time before the Slovak state and during the existence thereof. Thesis is structured into four sections. First and second section represents theoretical basis of the research and historical background of the social and political relations of the two nations. Third part on methodology proposes method of the execution of the research itself, defines the research sample and research queries. Fourth part consists of the analysis of the articles, using the selected analysis method. Master thesis is focused on the means employed by the two confessional currents, forming two political parties, to form media depiction of Czechs following their respective ideologies.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá mediálnou reprezentáciou Čechov v slovenských periodikách dvoch prúdov: Národnie noviny, reprezentujúce evanjelický prúd, a Slovák, zastupujúci katolícky. Sledovanými obdobiami sú pre národy kľúčové roky 1919 a 1938-1939. Pomocou metódy diskurzívnej analýzy J. P. Geeho práca odhaľuje stratégie vytvárania reprezentácie Čechov a jeho zmeny zo začiatku Prvej republiky, počas Druhej republiky a pred Slovenským štátom a počas neho. Práca je rozdelená do štyroch častí. Prvá predstavuje teoretický rámec, z ktorého štúdia vychádza, pričom druhá odhaľuje historické pozadie spoločensko-politického vzťahu dvoch národov. Tretia, metodologická časť, navrhuje spôsob realizácie vlastného výskumu, určuje výskumnú vzorku a výskumné otázky. Štvrtú časť tvorí vlastná analýza vybraných článkov aplikáciou zvolenej metódy. Diplomová práca sa sústreďuje na spôsoby, akými dva hlavné konfesijné prúdy vytvárajúce dve politické strany formovali mediálny obraz Čechov nasledujúc svoju ideológiu.
