Sixteenth century prints of Francesco Sansovino's Cento novelle scelte (A selection of one hundred short-novels) between textual tradition and censorship

Abstract:

The aim of this dissertation is to map the text tradition of Francesco Sansovinoʼs anthology “Cento novelle scelte dai più nobili scrittori”. Because the anthology was published in nine editions during years 1561 - 1619 and this period is often connected with literary censorship, I try to catch in the dissertation how the censorship influenced authors, “correctors” or publishers. Sansovino was inspired during the time when he compiled the anthology with the following works: “Cento Novelle Antiche”, “Decameron” by Giovanni Boccaccio, “Cinquanta novelle” by Masuccio Salernitano, “Erasto et i suoi compassionevoli avvenimenti che gli successero”, “Rime et prose volgari” by Giovanni Brevio, the short novel by Giovanni Guidiccioni, “Novelle” by Francesco Maria Molza, “Prose fiorentine” by Agnolo Firenzuola, “Diporti” by Girolamo Parabosco, “Le piacevoli notti” by Giovanni Francesco Straparola, “Novelle” by Matteo Maria Bandello a “Pecorone” by Giovanni Fiorentino. The list of sources includes works written between the end of 13th century and 16th century but the dissertation is focused mainly on 16th century typography. The work is structured in three chapters. There are general data in the first chapter regarding historic context and editorialʼs issues about the anthology sources. The second chapter provides the list of still surviving specimena of the anthology, the description of individual issues of the anthology and the exact identification of short novel sources. The third chapter is the practical part which aims at discovering whether, while preparing the anthology, Francesco Sansovino passively adopted the text of short novels from the sources or he rewrote the texts. I am trying as well to find out whether he proceeded in the same way as the majority of publishers do and he was inspired by the texts of the last available sources, and whether during the preparation of next editions he used the text from the last edition of his anthology as source or he continuously updated them according to the reprints of sources. It is possible to understand from these data how much Sansovino respected censorship orders (if he used forbidden or censored texts as sources).

Cílem disertace je zmapovat textovou tradici antologie “Cento novelle scelte dai più nobili scrittori” jejímž autorem je Francesco Sansovino. Jelikož antologie vyšla v devíti vydáních v období 1561-1619 a toto období je často spojováno s knižní cenzurou, v disertaci se také snažím zachytit, jakým způsobem cenzura ovlivnila autory, “korektory” nebo nakladatele. Sansovino se při sestavování antologie inspiroval následujícími díly: “Cento Novelle Antiche”, “Decameron” - Giovanni Boccaccio, “Cinquanta novelle” - Masuccio Salernitano, Erasto et i suoi compassionevoli avvenimenti che gli successero”, “Rime et prose volgari” – Giovanni Brevio, “Novella” - Giovanni Guidiccioni, “Novelle” - Francesco Maria Molza, “Prose fiorentine” - Agnolo Firenzuola, “Diporti” - Girolamo Parabosco, “Le piacevoli notti” - Giovanni Francesco Straparola, “Novelle” - Matteo Maria Bandello a “Pecorone” - Giovanni Fiorentino. I když výčet pramenů zahrnuje díla, která byla napsána v rozmezí konce 13. stol. a 16. stol., disertace je převážně zaměřena na výtisky z 16. stol. Práce je strukturovaná do tří kapitol. V první kapitole jsou uvedeny obecné údaje, které se týkají historického kontextu a nakladatelských záležitostí pramenů antologie.V druhé kapitole je zahrnut seznam dochovaných exemplářů antologie, popis jednotlivých vydání antologie a přesná identifikace zdrojů novel. Třetí kapitola obsahuje praktickou část, která má odhalit zda Francesco Sansovino během psaní antologie přebíral pasivně texty novel z pramenů nebo zda tyto texty přepisoval. Dále se snažím zjistit zda postupoval tak, jak obvykle postupuje většina nakladatelů a při sestavování prvního vydání se inspiroval texty posledních vydání pramenů, které byly k dispozici a zda při sestavování dalších vydání používal jako zdroj texty z posledního vydání své antologie nebo jestli texty antologie průběžně aktualizoval podle nových vydání pramenů. Z těchto údajů je také možné pochopit do jaké míry Sansovino respektoval cenzorská nařízení (zda jako prameny používal zakázané texty nebo cenzurované).
