Medial representation of men and masculinities in the magazine Žena a život

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje mediální reprezentaci mužů a maskulinit v časopise Žena a život. První, teoretická část se zabývá otázkou genderu, konstrukcí mužské identity a hierarchií maskulinit a tím, jak tyto představy reprodukují média a jak se podílí na konstruování reality. Média jsou zde vnímaná jako genderovaná instituce. Druhá část práce má formu empirického výzkumu vybraných mediálních sdělení časopisu Žena a život. Metodologicky má výzkumná část povahu sémiotické analýzy s důrazem na mechanismus dvoustupňového označování dle teorie Rolanda Barthese. Součástí druhé části je také interpretace získaných dat pomocí konceptů z oblasti genderových a mužských studií. V analyzovaných článcích jsou popsané znaky, denotace, konotace, užitý mýtus a řetězec znaků tvořících danou mytologii. Výzkum se soustřeďuje na mediální reprezentaci mužů a maskulinit, na vlastnosti mediálních sdělení a jejich případný stereotypní charakter.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis deals with the medial representation of men and masculunities in the magazine Žena a život. The first, theoretical part of this work is dealing with gender questions, the construction of male identity and the hierarchy of masculinities, and how these ideas are reproduced by the media and how do they contribute to create the reality. The media is sensed here as a gendered institution. The second part has a character of an empiric research of selected media communication from the magazine Žena a život. Methodologically, the research part is basically a semiotic analysis on the mechanism of two-stage labeling according to the theory by Roland Barthes. An interpretation of gathered data using concepts from the area of gender and male studies is also found in the second part. The following concepts are described in the analyzed articles: signs, denotation, connotation, myth and sign classes forming the given mythology. Research is focusing on the representation of men and masculinity in the media, the nature of media communications and their stereotypical character.
